I’m getting smart meters fitted in a couple of weeks (Glasgow). My gas is external box and the current cover has a broken door… Does the new smart meter come with a new external box and what are dimensions…? Anyone know…?
It’s the plastic external gas box cover not the electricity box (consumer unit/distribution board where circuit breakers are inside)….
Yes - the external meter cabinet is the homeowner's responsibility (as indeed are the consumer unit and anything else on the household side of the meter itself)
Is there a matin or drawing for sizes available anywhere for what they install… I’ll be building a cover anyway as it’ll be part of upvc cladding…so I could have the frame built to before they arrive ghen…
Firstly welcome to our Eon Next Community, it's lovely having you. 😊
As @geoffers has already informed you that the external part of the meter cabinet is the customers responsibility and you could always replace your cabinet once your meter has been installed.
If there is anything else you need please let us know. 💜

Will the meter be replaced by smart meter and in same position…? Is the size approx the same…?
I’ll be fitting a new cover post installation but was interested in size new meter will be to allow me to see height etc…
Thanks
@STEVIER66. Gas meters nowadays are much smaller than the older big boxy tank variants so you’re unlikely to have problems size wise. But you can’t request a particular type or size - you get what the engineer has on their van on the day. As it’s outside you might well have difficulties with it connecting in smart mode to the communications hub which is fitted above the electricity meter if that is located inside.
I’ve seen an installation guide which says the gas meter can be set up to the smart network before it’s actually in situ because the gas meters are battery powered and can be brought close to the comms hub to properly pair it. Whether it can then communicate through a wall when its outside in its final location is another matter.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and think the smart meter programme is a waste of our money. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
