@Plantagenet I understand this is an old thread, but I thought I would pop our updated thread Priority Services Register: What is it and how do I get added?here, as if anyone has any concerns around reading their meter, we can request a 'walk order' every 3 or 6 months for a meter reader to visit. 😊

The energy companies don't employ or send meter readers. Meter reading for the industry is contracted out. Morrisons are one of the companies that provide a reading service. It varies from region to region, but they cover my part of Wales. They don't do regular visits though. Every six months or so round here.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
The industry used to have a requirement to read meters on a regular basis. If no smart readings, or customer supplied readings, the meter readers would do the job, and inspect meters for safety and tampering. Every two years as a minimum. I think that legally mandated requirement has now been relaxed.
That would probably be why then , mind I still remember the days when the meter reader would come around empty the meter of coins and rapidly count them out on the kitchen table,if you were lucky he would slide some your way.
