What is Climate Change?

    Hello Everyone 👋,

Today we are discussing Climate Change!

I understand that the discussion of our impact on the environment and the term climate change can be quite daunting. That’s why it is also important to understand and raise awareness around Eco-Anxiety and Mental Health 💜 Take a look at our thread Eco-Anxiety - My perspective of the world to find out more!

    What is Climate Change? 🌍

Climate Change is the term used to discuss changes in temperature and weather conditions and the lasting effects humans are having on the environment.

Take a look at this short video to find out more on Climate Change:

We love to hear the views of our members! Take a look at some of our members answers to questions around Climate Change, thank you @Tracy @meldrewreborn and @Andy65 for providing great inputs!

🌎 What do you think are some leading factors of climate change?

"After watching 'Buy more' on Netflix, it still never ceases to amaze me how little we know about the stuff going on behind the scenes in our environment due to materialism."

"I recognise that global warming is real and I recognise that the population is growing and we all want to live more prosperous lives."

"I know very little about climate change, but I think an increasing population can contribute. As the population increases the need for associated resources increases such as food which means more farming, processing etc, more houses, more hospitals etc, all of which involves more and more emissions and electricity. Then there's the culture change where people have to have the latest thing."

🙋‍♀️ What do you think we can do about it?

"Stop producing more, recycle more, mend rather than throw away, share more and reduce what we use by buying what we need to contribute less to a throw away planet."

"We should harness the wind, sun, sea currents to generate electricity, in preference to fossil fuels to moderate warming to the maximum extent possible as well as preparing for the future. Attention should now be given to resilience measures, against storms, droughts."

"Someone may say that turning your thermostat down 1 degree helps, but if I turn the thermostat down from 20 to 19 degrees on my shiny new boiler, will it use less gas than someone running their 15 year old boiler at 18 degrees? ICE's have never been so efficient/clean, it would make more sense to me to incentivise the scrapping of the older, more polluting vehicles. The same applies to boilers."

🏠 How do you make a difference at home?

"Each one of us should do our bit by cutting down on materialism, focus on needs rather than wants, when we go shopping, get our fruit and meat in decomposing bags or paper that we can burn ourselves and make sure the recycling emblem on the product is genuine."

"Each generation has their part to play in the world we live in, My generation had to deal with the world after WWII. The current efforts to limit warming are the most that have ever been created to make the world better than it might have been."

    "
Using less gas and electric of course contributes"

🌱 What tips would you share towards a more sustainable future?

"Look after items so they can be used longer then passed on, shop in antique shops, and lower our carbon footprint. We really have a beautiful planet, everything is provided, it's up to us to decide how to use that, grow your own, reuse and share."

"It's human nature to want things and to better their lives, so the production of goods to meet that demand is absolutely necessary and it provides employment."

    "
In terms of gas and electricity, use what you need to use. People shouldn't need to sit in the dark or anything like that but switch off anything that isn't necessary. I would also say that when replacing appliances, go for the most energy efficient that you can afford."

The only problem we humans face is that everything is very good on paper and in our thouts , but we are a mouldable society ,there is much temptation out there, and so many mind triggers to turn even the most optimistically minded person who would like to change how the world is currently surviving around ,saying that I still don't believe that should deter anyone from trying changes, in the end I do also believe wat you have here you have in the next life, but many would disagree there if you think human life seases after death then it would be a take all don't care society, because that person dosent have to deal with anything in a afterlife, but energy which we are never dies, every spark connects forever if only the human could grasp this maybe just maybe it would turn humanity around , people often look at the past thinking less materialistic less pollution , but wen you dig deep it was just the same look at the exspensive materials in the huge Stately homes, the Dupont scandal ,and there are thousand I could mention , it's a illusion, there has always been a divide high class low class ,but now we have super rich but it's just another word in another timeframe, because the money has become more important and more shown in society to again divide us , the human will work if there is a end gain , we work to survive and experience, it's become a big controlled society with so many moral traffic lights to life , and there is only one outcome to that and it's power ,untill that changes in our society it will turn like the clock round and back again I'm afraid 🫣

I found a little blue tit in my garden today I buried it , it made me think in the big scheme of life itself , that little bird was once living too surviving no less important than us , yet so happy to just survive and enjoy it's environment , it had the most beautiful colours perfectly formed little thing it was , makes ya wonder a bit deeper about human life don't ya think 🤔

Just in case anyone missed the article about the Net Zero 2050 target on the BBC News website yesterday, I thought I would put up the the link:

The net zero target is I think readily achievable, but at a cost which is so extreme that it makes no sense to strive for it when our competitors are not. After WWII, many countries had a huge task in rebuilding after the conflict, but those countries were all doing it at the same time. I see the work needed to deliver Net Zero as being entirely of the same order of magnitude as the rebuild after WWII, but the difference is that we're conforming to all the international agreements while others are not.

Unfortunately we do not live in an ideal world, we live in an imperfect world. We're told that we can make the UK more energy resilient by investing in Solar and wind generation. That is true, but we could also drill for oil and gas onshore and offshore to increase our resilience, but the government prefers we buy the same on the world market, which doesn't increase or energy security. This is ideology, not science.
