However a little bit of research has shown that it was probably the supplier who wasn't Smart, since they initially hadn't set them up correctly : this appears to have changed now 😁 -
@geoffers
I intimated nothing of the kind!!!
I wrote (and its in full1)
“this doesn’t affect your billing. Contact customer services and ask them to send a tariff update to your meter - might take a couple of days to become visible.”
And then
“Apologies if I got it wrong! But it seems a bad failure of the system if a two tier meter and IHD combination cannot display the tariff properly and compute costs appropriately.
I thought these were supposed to be SMART meters.”
Perhaps you'd like to explain where I intimated "that the meter's couldn't store 2 tariff's therefore they weren't Smart"
-
.... So I assumed you were slagging off smart meters 🤣Last edited by geoffers; 27-03-25 at 12:22.

@geoffers
But your assumption was completely wide of the mark, and my comment included 2 conditional "if" elements. So the situation is that these meters and IHD are capable of displaying the correct information.
It was you who posted this:-
"Afraid the above response is incorrect (unless you get lucky with your particular meter) - I've been through all this myself 🥴"
Which now you admit is quite wrong.
I don't utilise a 2 tier tariff, so I was commenting on the general principle, whereas you do have a 2 tier tariff, and quoted specifics. I offered an apology (if I'd got it wrong).Last edited by meldrewreborn; 27-03-25 at 12:53.

@geoffers and @meldrewreborn I love how passionate you both are to help @FrankMcG but lets not fall out here!
Both of you are kind of correct! What shows on the IHD makes no difference to how your account is billed as we take our information from the meter itself rather than any IHD device so it won't affect your billing.
The IHD on the Next Drive won't show both rates as it's a Time of Use tariff. So instead of having two separate meter registers to track readings it's all tracked in the one log that keeps record of the half-hourly usage to specific timestamps. Our system then looks at that data and allocates the usage to the correct rate depending on the time of use.
For example if the data shows the customer used 50kWh between 2am - 2:30am our system would see this and allocate this to the off-peak rate. IHDs are unable to distinguish data in the same way and instead the IHD interprets the data as if there is only one meter register to bill to and our system then has to bill on the correct usage.
You should be able to monitor your usage in the app though. If however you notice there is an issue with the meter itself not showing the correct rates then you should absolutely get in touch with an energy specialist to make sure that everything on our side is set up as it should be and if needed they can send any updates to your meter!Last edited by Indyk_EONNext; 27-03-25 at 14:10.

@DebF_EONNext
@geoffers can get his IHD to display 2 tiers, which is not possible according to you.
previously @geoffers has explained the billing for next drive from the half hourly as you have also confirmed.
the meter though not only reports the half hourly consumption it also records a total consumption reading over time. Long before next drive was dreamt of, meters could operate E7 tariffs which were billed according to a rate 1 reading and a rate 2 reading.
from my understanding of @geoffers posts, he can see the two tariff rates on both his meter and his IHD, and perhaps the readings too.
the use of half hourly consumption data permits the introduction of tariffs which have multiple tiers (there being 48 half hourly slots in 24 hours) whereas meters cannot deal with such complexity from total consumption registers.
at present, if the drive tariffs allow 7 hours of off peak charging, there is a cross over with E7 compatible meters recording consumption against 2 registers, so perhaps these issues are temporary and will not be applicable in the future. -
I would also add that a full TOU is even possible - meters have 48 rates available, so one for each 1/2 hour slot - would need reliably updating every day for a truly dynamic TOU pricing, so not realistic and the 1/2 hour data makes more sense.
However, for things like Drive, economy 7, economy 10, evening/weekend etc., trivial to be done on the meter. -
@meldrewreborn this is interesting if @geoffers can see both the peak/off peak rates as usually it is only the day that shows on the IHD 🤔
It should show both on the actual meter itself but on the IHD it's usually only the 1. I will wait for geoffers to confirm and find out what the process was for this, as if it can be done for 1 in theory we should be able to do it for all 🤨 and it's something that I can certainly flag up!
As always I can't make any promises but we can certainly try 😊 -
I got up in the early hours and checked ... the meter was now showing the "Rate 02 Act import" register and the cheap early morning tariff rate, which was also being repeated on the IHD
(There seems to be some misconception with the EON staff with what the IHD actually displays - it's surely just a visual display repeater of what is stored/being shown on the meter)
Bright also now picks up both tariffs from the meter which it didn't before, so something has now been updated on the meter 🤓
Since the meter knows how much has been used on each rate, it should be able to pass that costing over to the IHD as well - I just need to check whether the correct costs are now being shown 👍Last edited by geoffers; 27-03-25 at 16:03.
