I have a detached house with a separate garage 5M away. The meter box is on the opposite side of the house from the garage. Into the garage from under the ground up the outside wall comes a thick black cable about 1 cm wide, which feeds a small fused distributor box inside the garage for lights, power supply to the shutter doors etc.
Is this size cable likely to be adequate to run a car charger, as I'd prefer not to have to run a cable all the way round the house, dig up the patio and create a point that way.
I appreciate that I may need to consult an electrician, but I'd like an opinion before I get to that point.
How's it going? As @retrotecchie has advised your best bet is to get this checked and confirmed by a qualified electrician as it is something we are not able to confirm.

I'm guessing the cable, which is rather small for SWA, is fed from a single breaker in the house consumer unit. Likely rated at 32A but maybe even 16A.
I doubt it will be rated for the 40A that some chargers can run at.
So, likely you will need an uprated feed cable. An electrician should be able to advise.
