The Government has launched a consultation on expanding the Warm Home Discount scheme, primarily by removing the core group 2 criteria of a high heating cost home. Many more people would get the discount, but the cost would rise to £37 per customer, up from £22 currently, levied through standing charges.

This would have the perverse effect of giving a discount of £150 in one hand and taking back £37 with the other. It would also mean that those currently in receipt of the payment would get £15 less net next winter. As its a consultation there could be many changes before it is implemented, which I think would be a certainty.

The link below provides a clear explanation of what is proposed, what the changes are , the new reach of the scheme and more. It a long read but worthwhile I think.
