Hey Community!

Some of you may have read that our @Lee_EONNext has an EV you can read about his experience in this thread: My life with an EV - 5 months in.

One of the things I asked him first was what is the range like and what things can have an effect on this, I have this fear (I'm sure I'm not the only one 🙈) that if I had an EV then I would end up stranded in the middle of nowhere and out of power 😅

Many of the things that Lee mentioned are actually outlined in this video, which has some fab advice.

Those of you with experience of an EV - Do you have your own tips to share, to get the best range out of your EV?

You won't get stranded @DebF_EONNext it's just the extra time and effort to find a charger and waiting for it to charge.
Have you tried looking at a manufacturers' website to see how range is affected?

There's one that has a tool that you can use to see the impact of speed etc on range. For example, increasing your average speed from 30mph to 40 mph reduces the range by 13 miles, as the speed increases the range drops by an ever increasing margin. Going from 60mph to 70mph drops the range by 29 miles. So driving at an average of 30mph this particular car has a range of 234 miles, drive at 70mph and the range drops to 132 miles. They're excellent for city driving but far less so if you want to do long journeys.

Depending upon the outside temperature and how warm/cool you like the inside of the car to be, the air con/heater can probably zap another 10 miles of range.

As a comparison, the same car with a petrol engine has a range of 399 miles at 35mph and 435 miles at 81mph (532 miles at 60mph). So my advice is to go as slow as possible to maximise range, speed is the enemy. I see plenty of electric cars on the roads, far less so on motorways.

@Andy65 thanks this is interesting!

It sounds like EV's would be more beneficial for people living in large towns and cities (where you can never go faster than 20mph anyway as there's so much traffic 😅) as opposed to country bumpkins like me living in a rural area where there's lot's of bends, hills and 60mph country roads, I would imagine I'd more than likely get less range than city people 🤔

Is there anyone living in a rural area that would like to share your insight into the range of your EV?
