Seeing the usage increase when using certain appliances can help you to better manage your energy usage of that particular appliance in future. You can make smarter decisions when load-shifting through energy saving events like #Powerswitch resulting in an overall lower bill too!

No.
EOn seem unable to upload the correct tariff rate to my meter, so the costs on the IHD are incorrect - however it does show the correct kWH usage.
I actually use individual energy monitoring smart-plugs if I want to check usage/costs per individual device, as they give far more useful/detailed historical information than the IHD

For monitoring purposes tracking the kWh is sufficient for most people. If consumption is controlled the bills will be controlled.

Once again lots of emphasis on the great utility of the IHD - so really surprising that when the IHD stops working Eon Next disclaim all responsibility for it, (once its over 12 months old).

The IHD is really only used to monitor kWh usage, particularly for previous historical daly usage (mine has up to 7 days).
The tariff information on my IHD has been correct from time to time but most of the time it is living in a cost world of its own. The tariff information on my spreadsheets are accurate and have always reconciled to the statements produced after mnthly smart reads.
For individual appliances, I can use my Mebus power consumption meter(just a plug) so tells me exactly how much specific appliances use (in kWh) from start to finish. So for example a full wash at 30C + Extra 1400 spin + Heat Pump tumble dry will go through circa 1.4 kWh for the entire process. Knowing this number does not make load shifting any more basic than 'Don't use the washing/heat pump during an energy saving event time schedule' but equally it works the other way so I'm quite happy to shift the other way when no energy saving event is scheduled and I need to do said washing and tumble dry at some point during the day.
got it in one! Mine displays consumption over time, the voltage, draw at a particular time, mains frequency and all sorts of other stuff that I care little about.
i don’t need to use it day to day, only when I want to measure something. Once it’s been measured it’s not likely to change its consumption over time. The main exceptions to that being fridges freezers air conditioners and heat pump based tumble driers - in all these appliances efficiency can decline over time, meaning they have to work harder to deliver the required output so consumption increases.
@meldrewreborn does it cost more to use them? I'm just thinking it's the same sort of concept as an extension plug and they cost a little bit more to run 🤔. It certainly sounds like a useful gadget though!
Yes they will use a little more power, but it will be fractional. And they'll only be needed on a short term basis.
As to extension leads, I don't think that they use any measurable amount of electricity themselves (even if they've a neon light on them!). They are in general terms best avoided if possible. But sometimes a permanent socket isn't available in the required place and an extension lead is the only option. I'm sure others with more technical knowledge than me will chip in on the acceptability of their use. But in the meantime there's this:
