Well, Iโve had another go and this time it was a sweet and sour chicken using one of my Uncle Benโs old recipes. Just what we need to warm us up on these cold days ๐
IMG_3404.jpg/a>
I switched on the slow cooker on the high setting at around 2.30pm and put a little sauce in the bottom of the pot. Lightly fried the diced chicken breast and put it all in the pot with the roughly chopped peppers and mushrooms. Tipped the rest of the unheated sauce over the top, quick stir and put the lid on. Now 3pm.
I left it on high for an hour to get it going and then switched it to low. After a few hours, around 7pm, it still wasnโt bubbling so aiming to eat at 8pm I switched it to high. Bubbling by 7.30pm it was back to low and served at 8pm.
The family verdictโฆ
Chicken was perfect ๐. Very tender, as were the peppers and mushrooms. The dish was piping hot. Only minor criticism was the sauce was runny due to lack of evaporation.
Next timeโฆ
When adding any โcook-inโ sauce from a jar I will resist the temptation to swill the the jar with water to get the remnants into the pot. Well, maybe just a tiny bit. Once I get the dish bubbling on the high setting Iโll remove the lid to get some evaporation. Other than that, Iโll stick with the timings.
I can still only assume itโs consuming less electricity than the oven. We used more than normal yesterday but it was towel washing day and they needed a tumble dry to get them nice and soft. Too rough when left to dry fully on the line ๐
Now what did I tell you about watching the amount of liquid you add. ๐๐. The veg imparts a fair amount. Still it looks AMAZING ๐, and sounds like it was enjoyed by all. It makes me feel hungry. ๐ด
That looks absolutely amazing @JoeSoap I'm going to give it a go for sure! With the cost of living going crazy and the shopping bills sky
high we've started to really pre plan our meals and shop for only what we need to make meals each day for a month.. we shall see how that goes!
Other half is doubting my shopping list! But I'm hopeful and the slow cooker will come in super handy especially over winter! I remember as kids we used to turn our noses up when Nana cooked Stew on a Monday cos we'd know it'd be stew all week! It was really good stew and I should have appreciated it more for sure! ๐

A shopping list is an absolute must. You'll be amazed on it's effect on controlling the good old budget. It also reduces the time it takes to shop. ๐ Couldn't do without it. ๐ด. Done it for years.

Your words were ringing in my ears when I added the bit of water to swish out the bit of sauce left in the jar ๐. I'm gently finding my way with it and will definitely bubble some liquid off in future.
I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit.

I would be more creative with the recipes but the family can seem to agree on a couple of particular jars of sauce so I'll stick with these for now. Careful about what @WizzyWigg has warned about with veggies releasing water into the dish ๐
@WizzyWigg I must admit it was a lot easier to navigate and we were in and out in no time! And I don't have to sit wondering what meals I can chuck together and then run to the nearest shop to get extra bits! Which ends up costing more than your original shop! Thank you for the encouragement I shall be keeping it up! ๐

Joe just to give you food ๐ for thought. This is a quick slow cooker stew I do for two: 250 grams of meat (cheaper cuts are tastier), 600 grams of veg (carrots, onions, peppers what ever is available), 120 ml of good stock, pinch of black pepper. Bung the lot in the pot, stir, cover, high for 30 mins then low for the rest. The stew may look dry when you cover it but it will have loads in about 6 hour-ish. You can if you feel it's necessary (I don't think it will be BUT) add a very small amount of liquid towards the end of cooking. What is difficult to removing excess liquid. ๐
PS Use what ever accompaniment you prefer. Tatties, rice, what ever. I do prepare my own veg stew packs and freeze them. Saves a load of time.

Reason: Extra information
I did notice the small amount of liquid ๐. The problem with a jar of sauce which is at the right consistency is that the water released by the veg will dilute it in any case. If I put less of the sauce in then there will be less of it but what there is at the end of cooking will be even runnier due to the higher proportion of water to sauce. You can see how I got Grade A in physics now ๐
I donโt want to have to pre-cook the veg to get some water out so Iโll have to try the โlid offโ method next.
It all gets eaten in the end. Iโll get to near perfection one day hopefully ๐ค๐
