I don’t generally have time to prep and cook between around 11.30am and 2.30pm so thought I’d better get it on the go by 11. We eat quite late anyway and were later still that day so it cooked too long. I made it worse by pre-heating the slow cooker and the sauce as per the instruction book 🤔. I found it all more of a faff than using the oven tbh and made a meal of it in more ways than one 😂
I normally cook the dish in a slow oven from between 3 and 4pm and it’s perfect. I’ll try Sweet and Sour Chicken a la Uncle Ben 😂tomorrow and get it in the slow cooker by 3pm to eat sometime between 7 and 8 so may have to kick it off on high to get it going.
The same length of time in the slow cooker as it would have been in the oven should definitely use less leccy 🤞
What a carry on this easy cooking is 🤪I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit. -

Tend to find instruction books are open to interpretation. 😉 I don't preheat just bung everything in, stir, cover and switch on. Not poisoned anyone so far 🤣. -
@WizzyWigg
That’s more like I remember doing forty years ago when I first had one. I think cooking instructions were written by chefs back then. They’re probably written by lawyers now through fear of being sued due to food poisoning caused by undercooking 😂 -

Well, I’ve had another go and this time it was a sweet and sour chicken using one of my Uncle Ben’s old recipes. Just what we need to warm us up on these cold days 😂
I switched on the slow cooker on the high setting at around 2.30pm and put a little sauce in the bottom of the pot. Lightly fried the diced chicken breast and put it all in the pot with the roughly chopped peppers and mushrooms. Tipped the rest of the unheated sauce over the top, quick stir and put the lid on. Now 3pm.
I left it on high for an hour to get it going and then switched it to low. After a few hours, around 7pm, it still wasn’t bubbling so aiming to eat at 8pm I switched it to high. Bubbling by 7.30pm it was back to low and served at 8pm.
The family verdict…
Chicken was perfect 👍. Very tender, as were the peppers and mushrooms. The dish was piping hot. Only minor criticism was the sauce was runny due to lack of evaporation.
Next time…
When adding any ‘cook-in’ sauce from a jar I will resist the temptation to swill the the jar with water to get the remnants into the pot. Well, maybe just a tiny bit. Once I get the dish bubbling on the high setting I’ll remove the lid to get some evaporation. Other than that, I’ll stick with the timings.
I can still only assume it’s consuming less electricity than the oven. We used more than normal yesterday but it was towel washing day and they needed a tumble dry to get them nice and soft. Too rough when left to dry fully on the line 😂
