No Signal Options

    Hello

Had a lovely Eon engineer try to install a smart meter, but alas with the SKU2 and the external antenna (a long bar about 30 cm long) it's not enough to get a signal.

We have no neighbours for it to use the Mesh Option.

Does anyone have experience of using a O2 Boost Box to get a local O2 Signal for the device? The O2 website says that these require you to pre-register the phone number to the boostbox, making me suspicious that the Smart Meter may not be able to connect via it.

Other options all seem to require a signal for it to repeat, which I don't have a good enough signal to do.

    Best

    Hi @WelshMike

The normal process is that these are supplied to provide a 3G signal for your mobile, hence it's likely that they would want to register it against your phone number. I can't remember now whether it's landline or mobile (I thought landline) as it generates the signal from your router. Anyone with an O2 mobile can use that 3G signal if they're within range.

I believe that EE are starting the process of closing down their boost boxes and it would be fair to assume that O2 would do likewise, especially as the 3G network will be closed down over the next couple of years.

So I would suggest that a boost box would be a very short term solution, assuming that smart meters can use 3G.

I read on the DCC website that 3 g contracts run out in 2033! so it might be worth it!

Sorry, but that O2 Boost Box will not work with smart meters as they run on a different system - there is no phone number linked to them for a start! Additionally, the use of them with smart meters is almost certainly banned anyway for security reasons.

Smart meters also don't use 3G, they use GPRS instead, or GSM for most S1 meters. Either way, this is old tech that O2 is phasing out soon, so all affected comms hubs will be switched out for 4G capable hubs. The only known solution is to try again with an SKU2/3 Comms Hub and a monster T3 Aerial. Let me ask @PeterT_EONNext to check if that's been requested.

Apparently the contracts with the DCC are extendable to 2033. DCC are currently looking at 4G as their next comms technology, because 5 G isn't nationwide.

    Hi @WelshMike

I'm afraid I'm not able to access your account from our Community here - I can only do this if your email address you used to register is the same as one that you use for an E.ON Next online account, and I'm unable to locate one for you.

What you'll need to do is get in touch with customer services so that an Energy Specialist can take a look at the appointment notes to see what the next plan of action is to get a Smart Meter working at your home. There are a number of ways you can get in touch which you'll find in my signature below.

Please note, due to the bank holiday, phone lines are closed today and will be open again normally (9-5 weekdays) from Monday. Our social media teams will also be unavailable from 5pm today until 8am tomorrow morning.

Our social media teams are still available though over the weekends, so if you'd like to reach out to someone either on Facebook, Twitter or WhatsApp, this is usually the quickest way to speak with someone.

Let me know how you get on.

    Pete 😊

I’m very sorry to have reopened an old thread but this has encapsulated my issue exactly!
I’ve had 2 visits for a SMETS2 meter & the aerial installed & both times it couldn’t connect.
Its costing me £££ on charging my EV!

I’ve asked many times for a try with the T3 aerial but it falls on deaf ears.
    Can @PeterT_EONNext possibly help?

    kind regards,
    Nic

Afternoon. Sorry to say that PeterT no longer on the forum. To help what part of the UK do you reside? I'm sure one of the learned and more experienced members might be able to advise.

    Aah, that’s a shame!
Location wise I’m in the West Midlands, very rural - no one near enough to get the link between 2 units.
Pretty poor O2 signal & we have the House between us & the mobile mast….

Wonder when the Vodaphone Comms unit will be rolled out?

Can't promise anything but we do have a volunteer who might be able to give advice, I'll tag him in @retrotecchie .

This thread might be of interest. Ok different part of the country.
