I've just had my meter changed to a smart meter. Unfortunately, I live in a flat and my meter is 2 floors down, so I can't have a display thingy as the wifi doesn't reach. The engineer said that I could use my Amazon echo show 8 to show my usage but I am lost as to how I'm supposed to set that up. Anybody here done that before and able to offer a bit of hand holding for me??

I have just done a little researching and looking at the skills mentioned above I'm not sure I'd bother. Saying that you are more than welcome to have a try. Neither have particularly good ratings and definitely don't show live usage. Purely historical (ie: previous days).

If you have a smart phone I would suggest do what most of us do and use the Hildebrand Bright app with the Eon Next app. The Bright app is the nearest to live-ish (not real time) readings.

Evening @Kalvin356 Now I've got to be honest I've not tried this but yes it's possible. If you look at Alexa skills I'm aware you will find one by Loop and another by Hugo. Both have the ability of showing usage. The usage may not be live.I would suggest a little researching might be a good idea.

I agree. The apps only give consumption information ( usage) though and not readings at any point in time. I somehow doubt that other devices could do that either, as you have to access the comms hub to get that information and security precludes that.

    Hey @Kalvin356 👋

    I hope you're well?

I understand this may have been a few weeks ago and I can see our lovely members have given some other options for to use instead of the IHD unit, so I was just checking to see how you were getting on and found a way to view your data? 😊

@Kalvin356 - Although you say your meter is 2 floors down, if you are able to pick up your own home wifi when you're near your meter (not the same as what the IHD would have used: that's something called Zigbee) this solution might work. Alternatively if you have a consumer unit (fusebox) in the flat and can access the wire coming from the meter to the C.U. I guess you could fit the CT clamp there.

This thread shows the device which has an induction coil (CT clamp) which clamps round the meter's live wire (no physical connection) and measures the flow of current in the wire.

It connects to your wifi network and displays the power usage in an app on your phone. It won't give you costs like the IHD, but you can monitor your actual power usage in the same way, and multiply by your tariff rate to give your usage cost if required.

The device is available from ebay, like the one shown here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/387240625624
