Random payments being taken.

    After a year of my smartmeter not working and numerous phone calls I unplugged it and put it in a drawer. Since then I have been taking meter readings on 1st of each month which worked well.

    A few months ago I noticed a payment was taken from my account on 20th and this has now continued every month, thus I am making two payments a month which is very annoying. The payment history also tells me that a reading was taken on 20th.

    Questions:

    1. How was this reading taken and by whom?

    2. Why were these random readings taken?

    3. Assuming they are estimated readings, how do I stop them?

    Just to clear up any confusion...
    • the thing that you unplugged and put in a drawer is your in-house-display (IHD)
    • The thing you've been taking manual readings from is your actual "smart" meter, which should connect to the outside world to the DCC (connecting using the 2/3g mobile network WAN=wide area network) via the comms hub which is mounted on top of it

    The IHD is just a display which mirrors the readings from the meter itself, but it looks as though you've been unlucky as sometimes they don't connect to the meter's Comms hub via the home area network (HAN)

    As @WizzyWigg said your bill will show you whether the readings have been sourced by reading the meter "smartly"

    However there are a couple of other things you can do to check whether your meters are now connecting to EOn via the DCC

    • The citizens advice bureau has a checker which will test to see if they're working in smart mode https://smartmetercheck.citizensadvice.org.uk/
    • Download the EOn and/or Bright app and see if your smart meter readings are showing up on these

    Morning @Devonrich Welcome to the forum.
    Each time a payment is taken there should be a statement online. On that statement it will tell you how the readings were taken. It should say Smart, Customer or Estimate. This is an example from my last statement.

    Have a look at the statements particularly for the 20th readings and let us know what it says.
    Just wondering if your smart meters are now working.

    I understand now about the smart meter readings, but this only applies to my gas meter not the electricity meter which is not transmitting smart readings except for a random Smart reading on the 1st October last year.

    Is there any way I can switch the smart meter off as it is clearly not working properly and when it does work it takes a reading on a date that is inconvenient to me.

    @Devonrich
    Just to clarify a few things for the forum:
    1) Are these random payments every month?
    2) Does your electric meter send smart readings?
    3) Do you only submit manual readings for gas?
    4) What does the statement for random payments say? Gas, Electricity, Smart, Manual, Estimate?

    @Devonrich

    if you contact customer services you can range your smart readings to be taken on a particular date. If you supply your manual readings on the same date, you will be able to see whether a smart reading has been taken before entering a manual reading.

    if you are making more than one payment a month perhaps you are paying on receipt of bill , if so paying by direct Debit would reduce your payments by 6%. If you are paying already by variable direct debit, then paying by fixed direct debit would ensure only one payment per month.

    As to turning off the smarter of the meter this isn’t possible but given communication is already patchy, investigating faraday cages (Which can be made from flexible material like protection for vehicle remotes) might help
