Hi guys. You helped me out recently with a broken gas meter so I thought I'd try you again😀
Every morning when I come downstairs (about 6.30am ish) my IHD is showing 18p or 19p usage for the day already. There are no items using gas overnight except the boiler pilot light.
If we assume that it is ONLY the pilot light, a rough calculation* means it costs me about £256 a year! Can that be right?
*19p divided by 6.5 hours, times 24 hours for the day, times 365 days for the year.
Pilot lights do consume an appreciable amount of gas, which is why they were phased out in the late 70’s. I wouldn’t trust your in house display, but refer directly to the meter to assess consumption. Might be time to consider an upgrade.

@meldrewreborn Now that's really interesting ! I just assumed all boilers had pilot lights even today. Ours is about 10 years old so maybe it doesn't 🤔. I'll check with the manufacturers.
my boiler a potterton 10/16 dates from 1988. It’s efficient enough to make its replacement at the old prices not cost effective. But now I’m not so sure.
When I moved into my current house in '94 @cheshireman103 a Potterton boiler had recently been fitted and that never had a pilot light, so if yours is about 10 years I would think it's extremely unlikely that you've got one.
WHen you get up first thing in the morning check the IHD and I bet the Gas charged so far for the day matches the Standing Charge.
