Direct debit reducing dramatically?

Hi, this is my first ever post here so please be gentle with me.

After the big price rises my supplier went bust and I was transferred to Eon Next. Prior to that my DD was £69 a month. Eon put it up to £116 a month. I recently received an email saying my new direct debit amount from 1.10.22 will be £79 then from 6.10.22 it will reduce again to £49! That just doesn’t seem right, I’ve never paid under £60 a month for years. I am scared I will end up in massive debit.

My thinking is to ask them to keep the DD at its current level, £116 as that is manageable for me.

Any thoughts on this very much welcomed.

Firstly have a look at this post and my reply to it. You are in the same situation. I would have thought your quotes would have been £49 from 1/10 and £79 from 6/10 so have a look again and get back to us if you need further clarification.

I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit.

@JoeSoap Thanks for your reply. I am still worried about ending up in debit. I’m thinking of asking for my DD to remain at its current level £116 as it is manageable and I really don’t want to end up owing them. Any thoughts?

You will not be able to keep your DD at the same level. I will try to dig up the info and post again. You can make one-off payments to your account however.

Did you look at the DD dates and amounts as I suggested?

Your drop from £116 to £49 is because of the Government freebie that every household is getting. It totals £400 and will be paid monthly in lots of £67/66. Your direct debit will be £49 but your energy account will receive £116 (£49 + £67).

Worry not, your energy account will still receive £116 per month for the next 6 months so you don't need to do anything.

@JoeSoap ok, I had another look at my account and yes, you are right, it’s £49.92 from 1.10 and £79.48 from 6.10, so thanks for that.

im even more confused though, I clicked on the link to change my payment and it took me to a page saying this:

Our recommended amount

Based on your usage we recommend a monthly payment of £146.48. Your current monthly payment is £NaN.

so they are recommending I pay much higher than the level they have said I need to pay, £79.48?

It does appear that it will let me change the amount if I want to, though I haven’t yet clicked any further to test that out.

I would advise you do nothing right now. Depending on what day your DD goes out will determine what you pay in October. If it is between the 1st and 5th it will be £49 and if on 6th and after it will be £79. You should not pay two DDs in October. From November to March you will pay £79 and from April onwards £146 (the £67 discount will be finished).

Your DD will be adjusted if your actual usage differs from your predicted usage.
