I have a few questions regarding the use of a smart meter: Will a smart meter detect the time of day that I am using electricity or gas? Is there a lower cost for utilities in the evenings, or is it the same price all day?
Yup, smart meters are capable of knowing when you're using energy and have the ability to charge you appropriately - but this depends on the tariff you're on. If you're on Economy 7 for example, or some kind of Time of Use tariff, then the price you pay will depend on the time of day or night that you're using electricity.
There can also be lower costs in the evening, but only if your electricity tariff specifies it. If you're on a Single-Rate tariff, the price will always be the same. Gas has no such structure though, so gas usage always costs the same anyway.
