Smart meter not sending reading in .

    Hi .
I have a smart meter and have had issues with it not sending readings in for billing , I have made complaints about it and have numerous what's app messages telling me ,it may be a few days late but we can smart read your meter .

Only for the smart read to fail next time it is due to send readings in , and the complaint cycle to start again.

The smart meter is a SMETS1.

Is it best I just accept it will never work as intended ,or is a fix possible as I feel keep complaining about the smart meter is a waste of time ,as I seem to be going around in circles .

    Thanks for any replies .

@Richard60 - several things you can check...

    • Are the WAN and HAN lights on the Comms hub flashing every 5 seconds indicating the connection is OK? (I assume SMETS1 have similar indicators)
    • Can the "citizens advice bureau" meter checker website see the meter? If so it is indeed active & visible over the network
    • Can you see your usage via the EOn app, indicating EOn is picking up your consumption readings?
    • Download & register your meter with the Bright app - if that shows your usage, then the meter is connecting OK 👍
If these shows the meter is connected OK, then raise a complaint with EOn via email at unhappy@eonnext.com or call on 0808 501 5200

    @Richard60

The sending of readings is not automatic from the meter end - Eon Next have to send a request for the reading through the DCC to the meter, and then get the information back again via the DCC. If the chain breaks down then no readings. The reasons can be many including that Eon Next haven't made the request. You could request that your readings are collected on a certain day of the month, and that might force them into setting (or resetting) the instruction within the their own systems. The advice from @geoffers is correct. The hopefully flashing lights are on the comms hub mounted above the meter (they are two components rather than one). Post back if things are not as they should be.

The citizens advice meter check just says my meter should work in smart mode , I see my usage on the Eon app at all for odd days , many days have no data at all against them .

I got recommended the HUGO app by customer services sadly that did not work either as it was getting no info from the meter .

Not sure how many lights should be flashing on the SMETS1 meter EDIT only the HAN light is flashing on and off ,the other two green lights WAN are permanently on .

Last time I phoned up Eon Next could not get a read from the electric meter when they requested it ,but did get a Gas reading .

I have requested on the phone many times my meter is read on a certain date and the reads do not happen though ,it is very frustrating wish I had never got the smart meter at all .

    Thank you.

Don't know if this is your meter, but I found this with a quick Google for SMETS1 lights, which may indicate why it's not able to be read 😶

Maybe you should push for an upgrade to a SMETS2 meter, if the current one has failed or is connecting intermittently

@geoffers Thanks very much for your reply I guess it answers my question the WAN light is not flashing at all it is a solid green light , and to be fair most times I check the lights the WAN one is solid green ,so I think I can say my smart meter is not very smart ,and despite having the meter will have to send readings in myself .

At the moment I am struggling to persuade them to change the meter to a SMETS2.

They keep saying if the old one is broken they will fix it and not replace it .
