New meter

    I have recently been given a smart meter and it seems to be working OK.
    However there are a few questions which you may be able to answer.

    1) It's supposed to report back to base every half-hour or so, but logging into "My Account" on the website doesn't show any figures other than the zeroes from when it was installed. Is this normal ? Or does it mean the figures are not being sent?

    2) I have Economy-7. I think it is switching at 1:30 and 8:30am, is there any way I can confirm this? i.e. is there some set of button presses on the meter that will show the switch times.
    (I have a Kaifa MA120 - the new one with the buttons side-by-side rather than one above the other.)

    3) I was not given a IHD (home display) since the meter is in the basement and my apartment half way up the building and out of range.
    I was told by the installer that there was a phone app I could use which would do the same thing. But the EON app on Android only seems to do the same thing as the website - no usage details.
    So is there an app I can use for this ?

    Good afternoon @aw61 and welcome.
    First thing to ask is when was the smart meter actually fitted, simply because it can occasionally take up to 6 weeks to be fully connected. One way you can see if the DCC is able to communicate with it is to go to the Citizen Advice website. The link is here:

    As for apps most of us use the Hildebrand Bright app available free to use on both Android and iOS stores, purely because the EoN Next app tends to be 24/48 hours behind. By the way apps don't give live usage as such but Bright seems to be one of the best.

    Sorry to say I don't know about your meter showing times but I'm sure one of the many learned members here will be able to advise.

    With regards to 30 minute readings, you will not see them in your online account. All you will see in your eonnext account are your monthly meter readings.

    Make sure that your account is set to half hourly reads. Once logged in, click on My Account at the top and then select Your settings from the drop down menu. Then scroll to the bottom to 'Smart meter data preferences', if this isn't already set to half hourly reads, click edit to change it.

    I don't believe that you can access the switchover times on the meter but I might be wrong. If you are new to E7 then it's important to remember that the hours are fixed to GMT, so if you think your peak currently starts at 8:30 am, it will be 7:30 am when the clocks go back and obviously starting at 00:30am. Apologies if you already know this. My E7 hours are the same but they can vary by region.

    You can check what your hours should be by following this guide, as I said they are GMT so you need to add the hour for BST.

    As for your meter, I assume you have the type shown in the second photo in this thread. I'd suggest watching the meter for 5 minutes if you can, say from 8:28. You should see the rates change at 8:30 if those are indeed your hours.

    As @WizzyWigg has said the Bright app is the one to use if you want to see your usage down to 30 minutes, but as I said you need to have half hourly reads set on your account.

    OK, thanks for these replies.

    My "Meter Time Switch Code" is 811, which is consistent with 1:30-8:30 BST.
    Funny thing is though - it always has been 811, even though the old meter went into night mode from 22:30-00:30 and 02:30-07:30. (It was RTS controlled).

    I'll have a look at the BRIGHT app.

    All good things come to an end! If your meter is in a basement then it’s entirely possible that signals (radio in North, Mobile in South) might not get though the DCC and onto Eon Next. So essentially then your meter would be dumb and require you to submit manual readings. Let’s hope that is not the case.


    in the past meters were located together in meter room purely I suspect to facilitate meter readers. But we don’t have too many of those now and smart metering would work much better if meters were in customers own premises. Indeed in one or two recent builds that I’ve seen that is indeed the case.
    Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and think the smart meter programme is a waste of our money. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.

    Sounds like you are in area (region) 19 south-east England with those (RTS) switch times, many (old) images still show these. With the MTSC (MTC) of 811 your supply should have 00:30-07:30 GMT E7 time, if all is set up correctly. Do you have appliances that circuit switch at those times?

    I'm in the North West actually.
    My flat has separate day and night circuits - the boiler and storage heaters do not have individual timers.
    I think they are getting power at the correct times though, presumably the meter arranges this.

    One question has occurred to me - reading various webpages and having these separate circults I thought I should have had the MA120B, not the MA120, since it would need the extra connection.
    But as I said - everything seems to be working properly.

    I think they are getting power at the correct times though, presumably the meter arranges this. ... yes I believe there is an auxiliary load control switch (ALCS) switch to activate the off-peak circuit via a 5th cable from the meter

    Yes - I have found and installed the "Bright" app - it takes a few hours for the data to come through but it seems to be OK.

    I believe my night rate switches off at 08:37.
    The fuse/switch box in my apartment makes a "clunk" sound at that time, and looking at the meter there is a field on the display that changes from "T2" to "T1" at that time also.
    I presume it goes on at 01:37 but I have not gotten up in the middle of the night to check.

    The meter shows the different totals for day and night so I could read it manually if I wanted.
