3-phase meter conversion

I'm trying to clarify some things before deciding whether to switch to a smart meter.

I currently have a single phase dumb-meter. The service head is 3-phase, 100A (and has been used as such historically).

    Questions:

    1) Can the meter upgrade be to 3-phase ?

    2) What makes/models are E.On installing ?

    3) Does both the meter and billing operate on a net-metering basis ? (I.E: if the system is importing on P1, but exporting on P2, the metered usage is P1 minus P2) ?

    4) Will an appropriate isolator (TP+N) be fitted at the same time ?

Hey @cheradenine welcome to the community 😊

The best thing to do in this situation would be to get in touch with an energy specialist. We do install 3 phase meters however this is dependent on a few factors such as the current set up and even your location etc so they will go through your options with you. You can find our contact info in this thread: How to Contact E.ON Next

You say you currently have a 3 phase service head, do you currently have an isolator fitted? If you need an isolator switch fitted this would be a separate appointment as this needs to be installed we arrange your 3 phase install and before any panel boards are fitted.

The billing would be the same as you have now so all import would be charged on your monthly statement for all usage and then if you are exporting and you have SEG this would be paid seperatley in your annual SEG payments (assuming you had a SEG account with us)

Thanks, I'll maybe give them a call & see.

Isolators are placed after the meter, so fitting one prior to switching the meter would serve no benefit to the installation itself. Adding one after can also be difficult where electricians will not work 'live', and so are forced to negotiate with the DNO to pull fuses and/or cut seals.

Hence why some providers are installing isolators as a part of meter swaps as it avoids the whole dog-and-pony show every time work outside a CU needs doing.

@cheradenine you are right, I don't know where my brain is at today! 🤯

This should be installed after we fit the meter however it should be done before the panel board is fitted. Let me update my thread so I don't cause any further confusion 🤗

Please pop back and let us know how you get on with this I would love to follow your journey!

So.. I wouldn't describe the process as going fabulously well..

I spoke to someone that did confirm that this was possible, and to email the first source metering team via the main hi@ email address.

However, any time I do that, I simply get a reply back to "please call 0808 501 5200 to be put through to the First Source metering team so that we can get this appointment booked in for you."

When I do that (and get asked the same questions 3 times over), the poor guy at the other end couldn't get it done in the system, and his escalation then completely missed that I don't need to involve the DNO, I already have a 3-phase service head, or pre-paying for anything - all that needs doing is a meter swap and in this instance it's to a 3 phase unit. He then said he'd have to transfer me back to customer services, but that they'd likely transfer me back again to some other branch of the metering team, but instead of that happening I got cut off.

I appreciate that mine is an edge case. Is there not an email address for first source that doesn't get shot down at the front door? (Most orgs are trying to divert as much traffic away from voice as possible - email does at least mean it can be forwarded around to the right people).

So trying again, and an update for anyone following this path:

The 1st person I spoke to said that a 1ph dumb -> 3ph smart was not chargeable, but if I wanted to have an isolator fitted that would be separate and chargeable.

When I come to book though, the story changes that the only way of doing this is having a 1ph dumb replaced with a 3ph dumb - which is chargeable - and only then a 3ph dumb->3ph smart upgraded.

There's of course no reason to do it this way (the hassle of power disconnections happening twice), and your eight-legged competition will do so (and fit an isolator) for free. So I'm afraid that unless that changes, I'll have to move supplier, which feels daft given how bombarded I've been about smart meters!
