We were previously with Octopus prior to joining e-on. We had a smart meter installed and an IHD (which never worked!).
At some point Octopus stopped using the IHDs and sent out a small pink USB-powered device which allowed metering information to feed into the app, and that did work very well indeed, such that I could see near-real-time electricity use in the app!
@steve1215
The nearest device similar - ish to your Octopus Home Mini that I can think of would be Ivie Bud IHD. Here's the link. https://ivie.co.uk/eonnext/
I would suggest you do a little research and check your meters/coms hub are compatible and also what's involved in setting it up.
There is always the Hildebrand Bright app available but won't give you real time readings. It's better than the Eon Next app.
My IHD does show current electricity use! It can't for gas as the information is only sent every 30 minutes, not continuously.
At the moment I'm apparently using 206W. It also has 3 lights at the bottom and the middle amber one comes on if i boil a kettle, and i suppose it goes red sometimes. I personally don't find this information useful at all.
I fully realise that turning things on uses power, that I have to pay for. That is incentive enough to turn things off when they're not needed. I doubt that many people would go out and buy a replacement product on the basis that the existing one uses too much power, providing one already has fully converted to LED lighting.
I did though replace my freezer, saving a lot of money. Tracking down the energy waster was accomplished before I got smart metering. But using data from our sleeping hours and wondering whether that is OK or not is possible with smart metering, is a way of checking the consumption of fridges and freezers which because they're on 24/7 when not too many other things are.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and think the smart meter programme is a waste of our money. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
You can get real time through Bright if you use their Glow IHD / CAD too.
And of course if you're a bit geeky minded you don't need to actually have the Glow CAD itself - if your meters are registered with the Bright app you should be able to use the Glowmarkt APIs to access the data directly (which I guess is what the CADs themselves are doing)
Then if you're super geeky you could build some kind of real-time viewer application ... or just manipulate the data in Excel in the same way as downloading raw data directly from their website,

Yep, but without the CAD you'll be limited to the 30 minute aggregation over the API.
You won't get the 'instantaneous' power, nor the 1 minute aggregation data.
@geoffers Fantastic, this sounds right up my street. Thanks! I have never looked closely at our meter before but it appears to be made by KAIFA, model number SKU1 Cellular. In any case I've now submitted my meter registration to Hildebrand for the app / API access.
@WizzyWigg I notice there's a "Hildebrand Glow Display GD-1 Smart Meter Energy Monitor IHD CAD" on eBay atm - is this a good thing / will it help me get closer to realtime electricity usage monitoring?

Also, if you just want to view your real-time-usage in an app on your phone (totally independent of your smart meter) you could use one of these current measuring induction-coil devices which clamps onto one of your meter tails https://community.eonnext.com/thread...ll=1#post52753
