I have a detached house with a separate garage 5M away. The meter box is on the opposite side of the house from the garage. Into the garage from under the ground up the outside wall comes a thick black cable about 1 cm wide, which feeds a small fused distributor box inside the garage for lights, power supply to the shutter doors etc.
Is this size cable likely to be adequate to run a car charger, as I'd prefer not to have to run a cable all the way round the house, dig up the patio and create a point that way.
I appreciate that I may need to consult an electrician, but I'd like an opinion before I get to that point.
How's it going? As @retrotecchie has advised your best bet is to get this checked and confirmed by a qualified electrician as it is something we are not able to confirm.
We also have a section on Electric Vehicles & Chargers which has lots of helpful information so why not check it out. You can also contact our installations team if you are looking to get a EV charger installed and find further information on our website Electric vehicle charging at home.
Let us know how you get on or if there is anything else you need. 😊

I'm guessing the cable, which is rather small for SWA, is fed from a single breaker in the house consumer unit. Likely rated at 32A but maybe even 16A.
I doubt it will be rated for the 40A that some chargers can run at.
So, likely you will need an uprated feed cable. An electrician should be able to advise.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
@MartinH - you haven't specified what type of EV you have/are considering.
If it's just a PHEV (which won't need a car charger), that wiring should be adequate as you can charge from a 13amp 3-pin socket at 2kW (same as a 2-bar electric fire)
However as @retrotecchie says it won't be adequate for a full on car charger
That will charge off a regular socket (as can any EV) but only rather slowly. But it depends how much you travel in a week. If you only do a few tens of miles a day, slow overnight charging off a regular socket is perfectly adequate.
If however you want a smart level 2 rapid charger, then you'll likely need a rewire!
Thank you for all the kind suggestions. I'm getting really confused now. I'm looking at a 3 year old C 300 e AMG Line Edition Estate.
@MartinH it's the size of battery you have which dictates how much energy you need to charge it
My PHEV has a15kWh battery, so 7hrs @ 2kW per hr gets it nearly full. (14kWh)
However if you have a larger battery and want to recharge it fully in 7 hrs the charger needs to pull a much larger current, so your wiring needs to be upgraded to a "thicker" wire
