    That is a question I am hoping to answer over the next few days. At least one neighbour has two EVs. There is also the possibility of a mesh network to a property on higher ground that can get a DCC signal. Our electricity network is also on the edge, with a limited split phase supply, so the ability of a smart meter to load shed may be critical.

    The root of the problem is undoubtedly the lack of mobile coverage and there seems no way of solving thus, even if it is technically trivial.

    Just attended a community council meeting. There is a Catch-22 situation whereby no one wants smart meters because there is no connectivity. One even reported that their smart meter used to work but an antenna change disconnected it.
    The continuing matter of no mobile connectivity has not been solved in 8 years so probably not in my lifetime

    Does that neighbour have a smart meter/signal mesh could connect to?

    One of my friends lives in the depths of rural Wiltshire, and I know that when EOn upgraded his meters it has an aerial and is part of a mesh (comms hub says "SKU2 cellular+mesh" and the mesh light is flashing)

    Might be worth pressing EOn to chase the mesh option, though would possibly require multiple neighbour meter/Comms upgrades - maybe the new 4g Comms would be an option too

    @geoffers

    A rather 'interesting' anti-tamper measure on the incomer/disconnect....🤣🤣🤣

    The problem with mesh is that at least one mesh user has to be able to connect reliably to the WAN, and preferably two or more. The other problem is that mesh needs everyone on board. It's more suited to problem areas in new build estates (where proximity to an nearby node is a given) than it is as a solution for poor connectivity in more scattered properties.

    However, no hubs should be being installed now that aren't 4G and mesh capable. That is now the current 'standard' and has even got one smart meter in my hamlet working again after the 3G switch-off a few years ago, or at least it did work until the local phone mast was trashed by storm Eowen. . Mind you, even rural Wiltshire is positively an urban metropolis compared to here 🤣🤣🤣

    One day, I'll get my phone line back on..🤣🤣🤣
    Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.

    In my case there are 20 properties within a radius of 200m. However there is a rejection of smart meters, allegedly because there is no mobile signal to this central cluster. I endeavoured to communicate the way in which a few properties on higher ground could receive the DCC signal, and benefit those in the nearby valley. It fell on deaf ears.

    These are the same group who objected to a Tetra mast some 30 years ago. They also could not agree to a USO proposal by Openreach so I am just going to insist on a SKU3/T3 combination with a 4G meter. This should receive the claimed outdoor 4G coverage at my address. BTW if they come crawling for a mesh connection - should I co-operate?

    Well I never. Engineer arrived and despite the absolute assurances made verbally on Feb 13 th that the engineer would be equipped with SK3/T3 he did not. Still wanted to change the meter but I refused until what has been agreed verbally is actually done. I now understand why the DNO engineer said get everything in writing.

    Now understand why nothing is put in writing. The whole business of Smart meter rollout, the use of 4G meters and RTS shutdown is a masterpiece of muddled bureaucracy. Promises to supply a SKU3 and T3 were worthless. 4G is unlikely to be available this year. I’m just going to let the RTS signal cease, revert to single rate and wait. In any case, the day rate was effectively subsidising the night rate so the bills will not be that different.
