If you know a day ahead what the half hourly prices are going to be you could adjust to that information. But if you are working away from home or just galivanting, then it will not make much difference. If appliances become intelligent enough to switch on and off automatically then that theoretically could work, but the difference between theory and practice is often huge.
Battery storage at home seems the most practical beneficiary - so powering the home consumption from the battery most of the day and charging it at night using less expensive power. For me a capacity of 5 kWh (i.e. my average daily consumption plus a margin) would suffice and if that fell short some days I could use mains electricity to supplement. This seems a practical way forward. Whether the economics make sense I've yet to discover.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
@geoffers Seriously can you see everyone happy to look up daily energy prices. 😂 I would surprised if many knew where to look in the first instance.
We already see on the forum those who expect their IHDs to supply TOU data and are not totally enthralled when having to use alternatives.
In the future may be the wholesale market tracker will be the norm but many changes are required. 😉
Who's expecting everyone to take them up? Agreed it may not suit everyone - it's presumably the older generation, who can't even program their TV remotes who you're referring to.
I'm sure the more tech savvy people, and those who need to drastically cut energy costs will be more likely to use these tariffs

Nope. More those who expect to have all the information instantly at a push of a button. Nothing to do with age 👴 😂. Senior members of society will research if required. 🤗
Perhaps they'll reintroduce the wail of the old air raid sirens to warn populations of sky high energy prices. Or send the message to our mobile phones. Though not much use if you're not at home. But hopefully people don't have the heating on when they're out for just a few hours.
@geoffers Yes there is benefit to those who can invest in the necessary smart technology to exploit the price swings. So long as they can avoid the bars on the roundabouts when they come around. I'm not going to partake though, and I can assure you I can crunch numbers effectively.
@WizzyWigg
Or send the message to our mobile phones.
Hopefully not. There's already too many bodies wandering around in the outside world with heads down colliding with others. There was a full head on this morning in the Tesco's. 😳

Just looked at tomorrow's prices (stormy day etc) - so if you were on this tariff your daily rate would be based on the average cost of around 3.7p per kWh ... What's not to like 🤓
There's the conundrum 😉 - I bet you check your best value daily items like petrol; groceries etc and look for the best (annual) energy tariff, so why not have a flexible daily energy tariff too?
