Cornwall Insight has published a new forecast predicting a slight decrease in the January 2025 Default Tariff Cap (price cap), ahead of tomorrow’s rise to an average £1,717 a year for the final three months of 2024. Predictions show there will be a 1% fall in January to an annual £1,697 for a typical dual fuel consumer1.
I had a quick look today at where gas prices are going. I see that prices (UK Natural Gas Futures) have gone from 81p/therm on Sep 16th up to 102.5p/therm today. At this rate Cornwall's prediction of a 1% fall in the cap from January 1st looks a tad optimistic IMHO. Hopefully prices will stabilise (and possibly fall back this month) although I'm not too optimistic on that happening. 🤔

The latest predictions from BG are now looking at a 1% rise in January and sticking for April then dropping in July to around 7% above last July which is likely reflected by the Eon fixes increasing yesterday. Glad I fixed on Thursday on 12m v28 at £5 below the July cap, v29 is £97 dearer for my use.
Let's just hope that things don't get silly in the Middle East. Rather a lot of our gas comes from Qatar and if things go 'norks northwards' in the Gulf, then Cornwall's predictions may well go right out of the window.

That's another reason for seeking to fix tariff now!
