Brown energy: Charging your batteries on cheap rate imported electricity and then exporting it to get a better price per unit than you paid for it.
Only coming to this conversation late (don't know anything about SEG), so may have missed some of the content in the discussion, but I wonder how this fits in to Vehicle to Grid (V2G) where EV batteries are used in a green energy system as a solution for storing excess energy for use by the grid at peak times.
Using a battery only with no wind or PV is not acceptable for SEG purposes. Most SEG applications require an installation diagram and specifications of the equipment used. There usually needs to be some clarification that the battery cannot backfeed the grid. That may have changed but I'm pretty sure it's not allowed last time I checked the rules.
Fortunately that doesn't apply to me, I have PV+Batteries but I'd like to know explicitly if discharging from the battery is allowed or not.
For me anyway I'm not looking to dump all 14kWh of power as I like to keep 2/3s as reserve but GivEnergy does advise to discharge a system fully every 1-2 weeks to help SOC calculations + assuming it also helps with maintenance etc.
@Thewookiewon Just to add to this as @retrotecchie has mentioned. Without a renewable source, you would not be eligible for SEG, so being able to charge and send back would be counter intuitive.

The rules on brown energy have changed, I remember we spoke about this before @retrotecchie I did have this clarified with the Operation's Manager in FIT and the message received is the following,
'Brown Energy, the SEG guidance allows us to pay for both. As ultimately you have to have a renewable set up in order to do it'
I do remember this being a big NO in terms of SEG however has 100% been a rule change, I asked the question in November 2023. I hope this clarifies. I try to keep my ear to the ground around the rules and regulations.
Any massive changes their will be content off the back of it, maybe we should get something out there to confirm.

Latest version online 002 has no direct reference to Brown energy or calls out that discharging from battery to grid is permitted without avoiding the account.

Is so it's not something Eon Next would be able to amend etc, one thing I have learnt from working in Solar since 2014 is if you were permitted from doing something, the rule would be clear. The fact it doesn't mention it leads us down this rabbit hole of is this allowed or not etc? Which in this case the has been a rule change on this matter as advised.

4.29. A SEG licensee can choose to make a SEG payment for all export recognising that it includes a combination of green and brown export. Alternatively, they may require a generator to install suitable metering to calculate the brown export and deduct that from the overall exported electricity. Or they may pro-rate output or use estimates to calculate the green export.
