My smart gas meter has been in dumb mode for about two years, and my electricity has been in dumb mode since April. Eon Next are aware of the issues, because I've reported it several times. I don't mind reading the meters and submitting manual readings, because I keep a check on my meter readings anyway, but it rather defeats the object of having smart meters. @WizzyWigg is right, you can unplug the IHD, and put it in a drawer, because they're not always accurate, mine is still showing the pre April gas tariff rate. 🙄
@Johnh199simply don’t use the IHD if you don’t want - it not mandatory!
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
We would be looking to install a functioning smart meter. When we talk about Smart and SEG it's a different situation. One where we're obligated to provide a customer with a meter that records export, even then we would install a fully functioning smart meter unless there was no option to do so. This would be the only situation where we would install in 'dumb mode'
The link to the thread on Meter Certification might help,
In terms of the IHD, you are not obligated to use it and as mentioned above you can just pop it somewhere safe.
Let me know if you need anything clarified, I will be more than happy to help.

Thankyou Lee, for your input. However, why do I read this statement?
Yes, E.ON will put a smart meter into "dumb mode" if a customer requests it . This means the meter will function like a traditional meter and won't automatically send meter readings to the supplier. The customer will then need to manually send readings to ensure their bill is accurate.
Is this another case if E.on employees not fully understanding the situation and give conflicting answers, as i found only yesterday when ringing customer services ?
We would not install in dumb mode, SEG aside and even then there are some things we would need to check, however again if you were having solar installed and we could offer you a functioning smart meter, the option to have a install in 'dumb mode' would not be available
Can you pop me your account details please and I will get the feedback to the relevant people. Pop me a DM and I will make sure the advisor is aware of this.
I am really sorry you have been advised this @Johnh1995
The option to enable "Dumb Mode" used to exist with SMETS1, but was removed when SMETS1 Meters were migrated to DCC. It was banned from SMETS2 from the start and wasn't even included in the draft spec - it was just completely eliminated right from day 1. There's no longer a way to do it and I'm sorry, but any source that says otherwise is incorrect.

Thanks for that information. It is a pity that when i am in the process of switching to a fixed tariff and advised by a E.on customer services lady that a smart meter in dumb mode would be no problem. She even checked it out with somebody else.

Install the meter...don't fit the comms hub. SMETS2 in dumb mode. Job done.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
