We had smart meters installed for the first time last week. Since then we have had endless connection problems with our WiFi, having never had any issues before. Our Bt hub loses connection and we have occasionally managed to reconnect only to lose connection again. It started happening within a couple of hours of meters being installed so I can’t help think it’s something to do with them. Any advice gratefully received.
There is a possibility that the 2.4GHz ZigBee used by the IHD to communicate with the meter may interfere with the WiFi but only if the Wi-Fi router is between the IHD and the hub on the smart meters and you are using the 2.4GHz wifi on the router. If it's a later home hub, you should be able to access it and go onto the WiFi section and tell the WiFi to scan for a clear channel. If you have the option of using 5Ghz WFfi and your devices support that band, that may help too.
The channel used by the HAN will be set in stone at the time of commissioning the meters but the WiFi has the ability to channel hop if need be, Channels 1, 6 and 11 on the WiFi are usually the least prone to ZigBee interference.
Having the WiFi upset by smart metering is quite rare. Usually the problem is the other way around.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
Thank you both very much. I can’t pretend I understand any of the technical speak in the replies but I do appreciate the response ! I haven’t actually plugged in the IHD yet as I didn’t think this was essential to the working of meters so it can’t be interfering. I used the BT trouble shooting the first time and it scanned and changed the channel ( I think ) of the router but this hasn’t worked on subsequent occasions. I’m not proficient enough to attempt to try and make any changes myself sadly so may get in touch with Bt / eon to ask for help. Many thanks again
I’m not very good with the techie stuff but I think Zigbee is what the home area network (HAN) uses for the meter to communicate with the IHD. I know you haven’t plugged in the IHD yet but I wonder if you could move your router well away from the meter and see what happens (if you have another phone socket somewhere of course). Must be worth a shot if possible.

Interesting. I wonder, if @Wilk plugged in the IHD and waited for the meter to start communicating with it via the comms hub, if the inbuilt Channel Agility of Zigbee would change channel automatically after an hour or so and hopefully stop the interference between wifi and smart meter🤔
It's certainly possible that may be the case. If the IHD was correctly paired by the installers then switching it on should re-establish a link and it could well sort the problem out. Got to be worth a try 🤞

many thanks both. I will give this suggestion a try. The problem is actually in another property rather than my main home so I won’t be able to test this out for a while but once again, many thanks for your time and efforts, greatly appreciated.
