Meter Certification - Do I need my meter replaced?

Please will nobody tell me about Smart meters, I know everything there is to know about them, and I don't want one. A limited supply does not mean there ain't any, its just Eon have said no.

My in-laws have had them for about 4+ years (SMETS 1 BTW) with Shell Energy. Taken over by Octopus and remarkably the readings have continued to be automatic as they were previously with Shell. No need for me to ring them up to ask them for a manual meter read that I used to do ages ago. They don't need to provide them at the CAP changeover dates as they are automatically lifted at these dates in addition to the normal schedule of automatic readings pulled. 👍

I myself moved into a different home and inherited SMETS 2 smart meters. Now trundling along to 3 years with very few hiccups in the smart readings pulled. They are accurate and agree with my own monitoring. I even have a fuctioning IHD which also provides me with the actual meter readings should I need to submit any manual reads. 👍

I see no downside to having smart meters installed for your circumstances and very probably they will make your energy situation much easier to cope with. The worst situation (i.e. a smart meter that is 'dumb' that does not connect to the system automatically) would see no change with being unable to read your present analogue meter.

Ultimately the MOP (Meter Operator) such as Morrison Data Services would be very unlikely to schedule 3-monthly manual meter readings to coincide with the change of CAP dates anyway. 😟

Changing supplier won't make the situation any easier I fear as you would still need to provide a changeover meter read. 🧐

Sorry if this is not what you wish to hear 🤔 but wish you well in getting sorted.

Good evening @Termagant Anasa here 👋

I'm sorry to hear that you've not had the best customer service with EON next - I can see that @HelenaP_EONNext has reached out to you to see if we can see what went wrong with your customer journey and how we can make it better.

Any feedback or issues we see we'll be sure to pass this on to improve our service. We don't just pass on feedback and leave it we make sure any relevant changes are made and improved and we'll get back to you. It's our job to make sure we look after all our customers especially those that may not have had the best time so you've come to the right place to get things off your chest and make sure improvements are made.

As for your smart meters I understand you prefer not to have them and don't want to talk about them so we can note the account however this is not a permanent thing and it is our job to check in and ask you about smart meters at least every 6 months this is because circumstances my change and it is an OFGEM requirement.

We do have a very small supply of standard meters but as you know we are no longer making these and these are put aside for people that really cannot have a smart meter due to signal and even those ones we're working hard to find a way to improve the signal so we'd fit a traditional meter under very small circumstances.

I'm sorry we were not able to come to a conclusion that you were happy with at this time. If you do need to reach out please do so and we'll be happy to help further with anything else.

@Lee_EONNext A notification has popped up on my account that is indicating that my Electricity Meter is nearing its end of life due to an expiring certificate and therefore needs replaced. In the supplementary information on the eon next help pages it states that you would look to replace both meters in this situation.

My query is regarding the gas meter as the previous owners of this property decided to conceal the main gas valve behind the plaster board in our kitchen and install a new one just before the meter. When engineers came to fit smart meters the work had to be stopped because the main valve could not be reached.

What will this mean for the meter replacements as this situation has not changed? It states that you a required to replace these meters but in this situation I'm not sure how that will be possible for both without some form of major work.

Good afternoon @drewChapman81 Welcome to the Community! You have made a very good point and came to the right place! We would need to get to the valve and the plaster board would need to be removed - I know it might be a bit of work to do but it's a legal requirement that we have access to your meter including the valve - I know I always dread taking everything out of my electricity cupboard for any work to be done but hopefully you'll be able to get prepped in the mean time before we get that appointment booked for 😀

    @drewChapman81

is it the case that the accessible valve is not acceptable as a main gas valve. If so then removal of the covering plasterboard will be necessary to exchange the meter methinks.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.

@Anasa_EONNext So there is not even an option just to replace the electricity meter (which according to the message is what needs replacing)? It will not be a simple case of prepping by removing the plaster board as on top of that plaster board is tiles and kitchen units (including the nearby sink) so removing those essentially means we will need to renovate the kitchen which seems a bit of overkill to replace something that doesn't need replacing.

@meldrewreborn If I remember correctly that is what the engineer said about the newer valve, it could not be guaranteed that the supply was indeed completely off and there (understandably) they could not risk removing the meter.

Hey @drewChapman81 I'm sorry but we'll need to get that original valve and not just a case of replacing the meter - in an ideal world the valve should never have been covered up and although it might seem over kill at some point your meter will stop working and your energy usage may become inaccurate and it is a legal requirement that we have access to it all for your safety and maintenance. 😊

@Anasa_EONNext I agree that the valve should be accessilbe (if something like this had shown up on the survey we may not have purchased the property) and we have plans to replace the kitchen in the next few of years after the failed attempt at getting smart meters fitted, however it is certainly not something that will be happening in the immeadiate future.

I guess the takeaway here should be that I should only book the replacement for the electricity meter once we are able to provide access to the gas valve?

@Lee_EONNext Well I recently succumbed to having my pre 83 meter replaced because I couldn't argue with the fact that it might like me being a bit old and decrepit. I have swallowed my argument that it won't work because of the poor mobile coverage and my old house is a natural Faraday cage. I can still do a manual reading. However the pleasant young man who came to fit it said he couldn't because of a 'protocol' that doesn't let them work beyond the main contact breaker. Even though the offending equipment, a pre 83 electromechanical Eco10 timer is EON equipment that has seals and dire warnings against interference on it. He thought I might have to instruct my own electrician to sort it out but I can't see how that would work. I have subsequently received a text saying that I would be contacted about the issue. I can't wait😁. Has anyone else come across this problem?
