Account Access via VPN

Are all VPNs created equal? Might the version of VPN make a difference? Personally I don't use a VPN in the UK and I don't really know why its thought to be a good idea. I do though use a good internet security system and automatically clear cookies every time i switch off. I back up my data regularly and although I get spam like many others - I just delete it and block the sender (of limited benefit I know but every little helps! Where did that slogan come from?). I use safari on my iPhone and IE and Chrome on my windows PC.

In order NO they are not all equal - the best have a strictly no logging policy and have a more extensive range of servers. Some are faster than others as well. Of course the raison d'etre is to quote one of leaders (Nord VPN).

'Government agencies, marketers, and internet service providers would all love to track and collect your browsing history, messages, and other private data. Best way to hide it? Using a VPN to keep your data to yourself.

I actually use Surfshark and setting its VPN to a UK server (rather than a foreign one) gives me full access to both the forum and the account pages. 😁 😎

I'm going to start using my VPN more regularly from now on leaving it (Surfshark) to use a VPN server within the UK just to see what issues come up (if any). From time to time I will no doubt use US and Australian servers (as and when needed) as that usually enables me to bypass geographical restrictions with a couple of sporting sites that I look at occasionally. I see no real downside to this approach especially as hopping to another VPN server takes just a matter of seconds. 🤪

So Nord VPN tell you you're at risk and then sell you their VPN to combat said risks? I have the use of a VPN from Norton if I want it, but I don't really buy the idea that I (or many others need one) But I suppose if lots of people get and use a VPN t(and they work as advertised) then those without such protection will be targeted even more.

I'm still not convinced that they are necessary.

The privacy/security aspect is a minor byproduct for my usage but my primary use is to circumvent geographical restrictions on certain sports websites in the US and Australia.

Obdusman replied they will be happy to investigate the case, just need to wait for 8 weeks with no resolution from eON. So parking everything until mid-September for now.

There is only one type of VPN that myself and my friend Blastoise186 trust - and that's a self-hosted one. Blastoise runs his own instance using Ubiquiti Teleport (which runs on WireGuard) using his Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine and we both have our own keys for it. Lets us route our VPN connections back to a trusted location using hardware he explicitly controls.

Otherwise, there's not much benefit to having a VPN - all you're doing is moving the problem somewhere else. And would you rather it go via a UK ISP which has VERY STRICT GDPR compliance to deal with... Or some random company in Timbuktu or Bermuda with absolutely no such protections at all?
Just another guy passing by... The unknown tech way...
