"Hi, it's E.ON Next. We've identified that your smart meters will stop working soon. You'll soon receive a message from 447507309093 to book your appointment to exchange them. Please reply to the message that follows."
My understanding is that I have a SMETS1 electricity meter and a dumb gas meter. When I moved into the property two years ago there was no IHD - I'm guessing the previous occupants took it with them. I also recently moved from British Gas to E.On.
With the installation of new smart meters, will this be an opportunity to get a new IHD that can work with both meters? Do I need to specifically request one before or at the point of installation?
you should insist upon a new IHD as once such device is paired to meters it doesn’t work with any other. New meters = new IHD, the old one even if you had it, wouldn’t function at all.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
Thanks, I will certainly ask for a new IHD when they come to change the meters.
I was just wondering with the SMETS1 electricity meter if they will actually just upgrade it rather than replace it, so is there a chance they will say I should already have an IHD, and to just continue using that instead. Could the old IHD - wherever it may be - theoretically be paired with a new gas smart meter alongside the existing smart electricity meter?
The previous occupants took everything that wasn't nailed down, and quite a lot that was, including the doorbell, fire alarms, curtain rails, etc. They would have taken the meters as well if they could.
the old meter is probably not able to be upgraded, such action was taken remotely by DCC in recent years. Some meters were not upgradable because of manufacturer non cooperation and others because of technical issues. And upgrade is a tech bench job now. But there is always the exception to the rule.
Hi all, this has been reported elsewhere as a spam/scam message and has been reported many times over the last couple of years from this 447507309093 number claiming to be Eon. Many of those who received these messages are not Eon Next customers and some don't even have smart meters! I have just had two messages from the same number with this wording and will be ignoring them.

Not sure if that's actually the case...
I know that using another IHD won't work with your existing meter unless it's been paired with it during the installation procedure, but I can see no reason why an existing IHD's credentials couldn't be registered with the Comms hub by the installation engineer as part of the new installation process.
The meters need to know the GUID of the IHD trying to connect to them, but I doubt that the IHD knows anything about the meters.
I'm probably totally wrong, but seems to make sense to me 😁
You are right that the GUID can be paired by the engineer at installation time, but I have a feeling that old IHDs intended to work with SMETS1 meters may work with SMETS2 hubs but whether they have all the right functionality I'm not sure. The ZigBee protocol for the HAN wasn't changed when they transitioned to SMETS2 but SMETS2 may offer additional functionality that older hubs didn't support.
Not that I can see any difference between old IHDs and newer ones other than the display quality is usually rather better.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
What is technically possible is one thing, what is practical is quite another. Keeping things simple is generally a great idea. I have no real expertise in these matters, so i rely on good advice given by others, and the parrot it.
