But surely 'usage now' is instantaneous wattage (power) and cost/hr is what that power would cost if used for an hour (energy)?
An intermittent device like a heating circulator pump or a refrigerator kicking in or boiling a kettle would cause that instantaneous power to shoot up, but unless that load is sustained for an hour, the cost/hr is rather irrelevant. Turn the kettle off, or the fridge compressor stops or the pump isn't running, that cost/hr will drop right down again.
Yes. The wattage shown is what is actually being consumed there and then and the cost shown is extrapolated if sustained for an hour so both are constantly changing.
I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit.
Are you absolutely sure your IHD is showing just the electricity pricing or it is showing total energy cost? A 10kW gas boiler running for an hour would rack up about £1 in energy costs.
The other thing I would be tempted to do is ignore the IHD and go and take actual kWh readings from the electricity meter itself before and after you run the boiler. See how much actual electricity is used over the period and calculate the cost using your tariff prices. Does your IHD show the correct per unit rates?
yes, definitely just showing electricity consumption. I’ll try to upload photos. I’ll do as you suggest and take readings from meter
I have to keep coming back to this thread. I have just looked at my IHD and it says 400w is being consumed at a cost per hour of 12p. I switch on my immersion heater and it jumps to 3.4kW at a cost per hour of over £1. Assume for a minute that you do have an immersion heater. If you run a hot tap for a bit and the consumption on the IHD jumps significantly to over £1/hr (over 3kW) then as long as you didn't run too much hot water then that consumption/cost should only show for a while until the water reaches temperature again and then fall back to normal. Is this what is happening?
If so, you could switch your hot water on the boiler control to OFF. If you then use your hot water as normal and it never runs out then there will be an immersion heater somewhere in the Megaflo. I'm not doubting your word that you don't have an immersion heater but the things you are reporting would be entirely normal if there was one fitted and I can't think of a fault that would cause these things if there wasn't one.
I've just had a mooch at Megaflo Cylinders. They all have immersion heaters as standard. The smallest has a 1Kw immersion heater and the larger ones have one or two 3kW immersions.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.

Ah, there you go then. My old paperwork suggests there are indirect heat models. But the evidence is stacking up.
@JoeSoap. You’ve got to be right. There’s no other explanation. Really appreciate your time!
Haha... others here will attest that I get things wrong 😂 There should be a plastic hinged cover (with some depth) near the bottom of the tank. Mine has two wires coming from it. One will be from the thermostat inside the cover that controls the indirect heat (the boiler) and the other goes to the wall switch which is for the immersion heater (also inside the cover) supply. The immersion has its own thermostat. When I want hot water fast I switch the boiler and the immersion on... but I have to remember to switch that wall switch back off otherwise I will see what you are seeing.
Expect to see some bill savings then. Electricity is more than 4 times the price of gas. You asked an innocent question and the forum brains trust diagnosed a remedy!
Tea and cake all around methinks. Well done team!
