…but EoN have been pestering me about it for years now. Now they’re claiming it’s going to stop working soon. Is the only thing I can do now to change supplier? My meter is only 10 years old in a new build. I’ve told them already but they won’t stop, I even had to block their number. What can I do?
@WizzyWigg Hi😊 I’m not on Economy 7 and I don’t know what RTS is. I was on a fixed tariff but I’m not allowed one now because I don’t want a smart meter so they put me on variable.
Unlikely you will be on RTS as these haven't been installed since the mid 90s, but your meter will be coming up to the end of it's ten year certified life. It's unlikely to 'stop working' as such but will possibly drift outside of the industry-defined accuracy parameters.
There is nothing to stop you having a fixed tariff with a conventional meter. That is my situation. They can offer me a smart meter 'if eligible', but not having one does not prevent you from chosing a fixed deal. Smart meters don't work where I live and another million or so are due to drop off line in the coming weeks as more network providers are switching off 3G services ahead of the government date of 2032.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.

Is it not the case though, certainly to get the best deals, that you have to agree to have a smart meter installed, if eligible? If it's not possible to have them then you can still keep the tariff but if it is possible then you have to use delaying tactics as long as possible if you still don't want one fitted.
@Hagbeth Things can go wrong with metering and billing whatever type of meter you have. In my experience, the problems that are particular to smart meters alone are normally that they don't give the promised advantages and at worst just behave like standard meters. I stand to be corrected on that and I'm not for one minute questioning your preference for standard meters.
I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit.
If you were forced to have one, you don't have to use the in home display (many don't work anyway!) and meter communication via mobile technology (the south) or radio (the north) can be effectively neutered if you do some googling (other search engines are available).

Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
Thank you for your answer. I understand now. They probably mean that the 3G will stop working. Good idea about taking the deal and not the appointment 😂😎

No. Unless you opt for a ToU tariff that relies on half-hourly smart metering, such as Next Drive, you don't NEED a smart meter to get a fix. I fixed last year, knowing darn well that a) they don't install smart meters in my area and b) even they did, they don't work so they won't bother badgering me!

Fair enough. But did your T&Cs not say you had to agree to having one fitted if eligible? If you’re not eligible due to circumstances outside your control then you can still get the fix.
The key words are 'if eligible'. I don't think I am as Eon.Next don't install in my area and unless they can guarantee fitting a meter with a 4G (Vodafone) comms hub, then smart meters just don't have any connectivity round here. So even if they could install a 'current' model, it won't work with the current communications hubs. They know that, I know that. My 1997 vintage L&G non-smart meter lives on, as does my fix.
