The key words are 'if eligible'. I don't think I am as Eon.Next don't install in my area and unless they can guarantee fitting a meter with a 4G (Vodafone) comms hub, then smart meters just don't have any connectivity round here. So even if they could install a 'current' model, it won't work with the current communications hubs. They know that, I know that. My 1997 vintage L&G non-smart meter lives on, as does my fix.
I agree about the key words being 'if eligible'. That means if you don't think you're ineligible then signing up to this type of tariff where you agree to having smart meters fitted 'if eligible' will likely mean having a smart meter or two fitted at some point, perhaps sooner rather than later, unless you are willing to try the delaying tactics, if you think they will work.
