My gas meter has been a problem for a while. Now it has water in the slot.
I have tried Cadent who told me to call Eon who couldn't tell me who to call.
My meter is inset.
I bought an over box ( biggest size) but it's too small.
I have tried 4 gas engineers who say its not something they do.
The meter now wont read the card. There is no error message, its blank.
I'm worried that when I run out of gas Eon won't fix the meter because of the box
Please can anyone help?
From the aspect that it’s said that the meter can’t read the card, it’s possible that this is a prepayment meter that need replacing urgently - with the customer unable to top up and thus eventually being cut off.

@Hmgeldard Hello👋 what did the Energy Specialist advise when you called? Is there any covering at all for the meter? If there is water in the meter or a frozen card slot the meter box would need to be repaired before an Emergency appointment can be booked - this is just to ensure that the issue with the meter doesn't happen again when the meter is repaired/replaced.

Hi
Eon advised I need the meter box replaced
Problem is its a mk 1 recessed box and they don't make them any more.
I found a gas engineer who would fit it and Cadent agreed to remove the pipework but what can I do if I can't buy a box to fit?
I' m out of ideas.
I'm worried i wont be able to top up the meter soon and I'm on the priority register.
I've been asking for smart meters nearly 2 years now.
Thanks
Meter boxes are pretty universal and almost any builders merchant can supply an equivalent. If not, you can buy a replacement door with hinges and lock for a mk1 box which will save faffing about.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
Hi
Meter boxes now come in a standard size (Mk2) which are too narrow, they wont cover the gap. I can't replace the door as the part the hinge goes into is broken and won't hold it.
I've asked about 5 meter box companies and bought and returned 2 boxes. It's costing a fortune in postage. ive started to notice other peoples meters in this road all taped up as they obviously have the same size meters as me. You've now agreed my smart meter exchange but I'm assuming I need the box fixed first.
I think this is all very complicated and would be really confusing especially for someone elderly.
I'm really sorry to hear about this - I can confirm that the meter can't really be changed until the meter box is replaced/repaired, as the issue that has caused the fault with the current meter will just re-occur without this first taking place.
Are you able to post a picture of your gas meter/current meter box? Although E.ON Next won't be able to replace this, we may be able to advise further on where you may be able to purchase one from as I understand that this situation needs to be resolved as soon as possible.
I'm also assuming that you own the property and you don't rent from a landlord/housing association?
