Interesting article. An ex police officer told me that they were called to someone's house to investigate potential energy theft. In an attempt to almost humour the householder, they popped their head through the loft hatch just in time to see two rubber-gloved hands holding crocodile clips disappearing back through a hole in the wall to the neighbouring property.

Almost unbelievable, but it happens.

Can I ask you to count the time between the red flashes on the meter (with the main red trip switched on) and report back.


Then 'isolate' each circuit (in turn) - any difference in the flash rate?



The reason I ask is that the meter would be advancing by approx 24kWh per day irrespective of whether the main trip (usually red but mot on my consumer unit) on your consumer unit/fuse board is switched on/off from what you have reported so far.

Our energy specialists would usually ask you to do a space test: submit a reading every day for the next 7 days at the same time to see if there are any spikes (it looks like you are doing this anyway) they would also ask you to do a load test which is the insanity or kettle test that @Mailman and @retrotecchie have mentioned which again it sounds like you have done.

If you still believe that your meter is running fast and it's nothing to do with your appliances then we can arrange for an engineer to come an do a meter accuracy test however this would be a chargeable appointment of £100.93 per fuel, if the meter is found to be faulty then this would be returned to you.

However as you have mentioned that your meter is still running when you have turned the electricity off then this sounds more like it could be a faulty meter, your meter readings shouldn't move when you have no supply going through the property. I would therefore suggest getting back in touch with an energy specialist to get an appointment booked.

Just to note if you do decide to get back in touch with an energy specialist then they may still ask you to perform the above tests again as we may need to have it evidenced on the system before an appointment will be accepted 😊 I hope this helps a bit.

I've isolated each individual circuit breaker and the timing between the red flashes was roughly 4 - 5 seconds, there didn't seem to be a great deal of difference as i switched each one off.

At 4 second intervals that would mead 15 per minute or 900 per hour. That sits about right with you seeing your meter advance 1kWh when you switched everything off at the mains for an hour.

Just for comparison I checked mine just now. I did not isolate anything and with two freezers and two fridges plugged in, the computer on and some AV equipment on standby, I have a baseline of 1 flash every 12 seconds.
