Well here's an interesting observation - I've been monitoring my EV charging usage whilst on the standard Next Flex tariff.
When I was charging during the daytime my average charge rate was 12.2% per hour
Since moving to the Next Drive tariff I've been charging after midnight and the average charge rate is now 13.1% per hour
A little bit of Googling returned this,
As demand increases both voltage and frequency can drop
so it looks like the charging is quicker at night when there's less demand (but unfortunately apart from the lower rate, not a cost saving cos the kWh will be the same ie more Watts in less time)
I guess it makes sense. As the load increases at peak times then the voltage will drop so the battery will charge quicker at night than it would in the day. That could be handy if you wanted to make sure the charging time is well within the off-peak time period considering the confusion around BST and Zulu 👍
I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit.
@geoffers Interesting it certainly makes you think of what's going to happen as the number of non-hybrid EVs increases. Night time demand must increase. The way things are, is the supply infrastructure capable of handling this? Nothing indicates at the moment it can.
Simply it's not just cars it's all the rest on top as well.
I'm the second to last on a very long three phase 11kV overhead line. The last customer on the line is a large dairy farm who fire up their milking sheds three times a day. 4am, 2pm and 7pm. the 2pm and 7pm volt drops on the line are not very large...a volt or two measured at a socket, but the 4am one can sometimes be a fair few volts. It's the factory three miles away nearer the start of the line that doesn't half pull the amps overnight!
A neighbour up the road even had to install a CVT to run his home recording studio as his voltage fluctuations were even worse than mine!
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
I've only got a 63A supply to the property. If I ever did get an EV (not likely) I'll simply charge it by the simple expedient of plugging into a conventional 13A socket! I'm in less of a rush these days 👴.

The good old Granny Charger. Keep working on the Fusion Gen! 🤗

@WizzyWigg - totally agree: did you watch that 2 part series on the beeb the last 2 Sundays? (still available on i-player)...
Sorry @geoffers I haven't. Hopefully get chance once the grandkids get back to school. Viewing at the moment tends to be anything from Peppa Pig to Guardians of the Galaxy.
I watched the BBC thing about heat pumps and stuff. It really did prove that neither electric cars or heat pumps are the way to go until we have a grid capable of handling the anticipated capacity.
If anything, it put me off EV's even more, and heat pumps are a no-no for me anyway.
