I used to be able to alter my direct debit upwards/downwards to ensure that I never get into a lot of debt/don't massively overpay. It now no longer allows you to reduce the direct debits.
I only want to lower it by 20 pounds, when their estimate suggests we are paying 90 pounds over the odds, so what is the problem?
Do I have to go through the rigmarole of calling every time I want to do this now?
You can only reduce your DD by 10% on-line. I presume this would mean 10% from where it was set by Eon Next, so you couldn’t keep reducing it in stages. You will have to contact customer service it seems.
You could choose variable DD so that you only pay what’s on the bill each month but still keep the DD discount. If you have a credit balance then that would get used up first in the initial payments.
I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit.
So as others have mentioned in this thread you can lower your direct debit online by 10% if you need to reduce it by more then you will have to contact an energy specialist.
You may find that if you have a pending payment or your account is in debit that it won't allow you to reduce your direct debit, in this case again we would suggest that you get in touch with our energy specialists who will be able to offer you further support 😊

I am on the variable too at the moment, but I have a set DD every month, which I prefer, can even out the spending over the year that way (more or less). I used to be able to change it on the website and always kept myself in a reasonable position, not sure why they would remove that facility for people who aren't up to their neck in debt.
To be clear, I’m talking about a variable direct debit and not a variable tariff. Your monthly DD will only be based on the actual amount used in the billing period so will vary. Any credit balance would be used up first.
I think there is some sort of algorithm in there as to whether you can reduce the DD. Is your account currently in credit or debit ? Mine is in debit by £30 after billing and awaiting the monthly DD credit to be applied. My DD is set at twice the recommended due to recently moving gas and it won't let me reduce below the recommended. My daughter's account is in credit with the DD set the full 10% below recommended to eat into that credit and the option for her to adjust it down from recommended is there.
@molerat Yes, I assume something like that happens, maybe when my next payment comes out in a couple of days it will change, will try again then. Just odd that the website's estimated monthly usage means that I should be able to lower it by 90 pounds (this is wildly inaccurate too, nowhere near that) but it won't even let me take off 20.
