Even if it did have an internal GSM modem, it would be hard coded to the 3G network and only capable of communicating directly with E.On. As E.On themselves are no longer in the domestic market, with all domestic business transferred to E.On Next, then even if the meter could communicate, there is no-one on 'the other end' to talk to! You either need a new meter, or will just need to carry on with manual readings.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.

It certainly does have an internal modem and the signal is full strength. I suspect it is the same meter as my neighbours and I know they are not doing manual readings. So what happened to the Eon customers who were moved to Next? As far as I can ascertain the unit has a SIM card so surely it is that which determines who can communicate? @Han_EONNext
That is useful. Seems this is a smet1 meter and the way it networks, or rather the structure of that network, means not all can access it. That is why some leccie companies can and others, like Octopus, cannot. Apparently most of these meters are being or have been upgraded to smet 2 which everyone can access but that I guess can only happen if connected to a network.
So in a nutshell - L&G smart meters are to be upgraded to smet 2 and the reported due date for completion was Sept 2022. The meter has to be connected for that to happen and if not it defaults to being a dumb or dormant meter that can be reactivated by the smet 2 upgrade. If a meter cannot be upgraded then the electricity company must take all reasonable steps to replace it with a working smet 2 meter by 31 Dec 2023.
Basically so long as the meter is capable of being read manually, E.on Next will not bother to address the matter. Many have tried, but successes are conspicuous by their absence.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but Iโll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
You would have had a response by now ๐ - what's the update?
The response directly from Eon was a none response. It just sent me links on how to join Eon Next and no information or clarification re the smet1 smart meter. I have replied and told them but why is it so hard to communicate with these people! That response was to an email I sent them and nothing to do with this forum post. I have heard nothing apart from that.
