I had my gas meter replaced on 27th January 2023, luckily I took photos, my old gas meter reading was in kW not M³.
I've just had my bill and its three times more than the same period last year, my tarriff was the same for both period!
Glad to hear everything got sorted with this @Taff7996 😄
Not entirely sure why or how the engineer took the wrong reading, but you're absolutely correct - the meter will have given a reading in kWh and m3 (the m3 being the reading, as the conversion is then made to kWh for your bill)
I'm hoping that some back-calculation has now been completed from the kWh reading and this is why your account has been credited accordingly.

Well done for taking the photos. Hopefully some mathematics can be applied to get things right. Have you approached Customer Service about this? The Community staff here are great at helping out in some individual cases like this (and may be able to do so) but normally only when contact with C.S. has not produced a satisfactory result.
I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit.
Good that you have your repayment. Gas meters always measure the volume of gas used which has to be converted to kWH. Your old meter probably measured in ‘00 cu ft!
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
It was a Secure liberty eg4v10 gas meter, you have to scroll through the options, one gave kw but the one you need to use gives M³.
The engineer who removed the meter didn't scroll through and used the kw reading
