Morning Community 😊

Some of you may be aware that we are approaching Energy Saving Week 2023 (crazy to say 2023!). Members of the Community will know that tips for energy saving is one of the centres of our hearts and something your Community team feel incredibly passionate about.

But as the Community staff talk the talk, can we actually walk the walk? Well, from the 16th - 22nd January we are going to be tracking our own usage and letting you guys know exactly how we get on!

There are a lot of factors at play here, and we all have different home lives with completely different usage levels 🤯 minimising our usage is most certainly a challenge! We all work from home so we have to have things running electronically basically all day. The majority of us live in multiple occupant households and our very own @DebF_EONNext is off grid for gas 😳 and just like @retrotecchie depends on them baby dragons to get by 🐲.

Needless to say that although it is going to be a challenge, we're all excited to take part in this journey with you 🏆. Would anybody like to join us?

@meldrewreborn definitely not a campaign and you do not have to take part if you don't want to. Lots of other memebers swing by the Community and something like this might allow them to join in.

The team and I are super excited to see what impact we have on our bills. 😊

I'm not quite sure how @DebF_EONNext and I can measure our off grid use. I suppose I can dip my dragon food tank and work out a consumption for oil and I guess Deb can count lumps of coal as she puts them on the fire🤣🤣🤣🤣

@retrotecchie you do make me laugh 😂, I also have LPG for my cooker wondering how on earth I'm going to monitor this 👀 maybe I'll weigh the canister before and after 🤔 For my coal I'm going to go by weight I think. We can easily go through 40-50kg a week when it's colder as well as wood, I know it's a lot however we have a massive fire that also heats our radiators and for some reason the kitchen floor 🤷‍♀️ so my goal is to try and 1/2 this as it costs a small fortune and is really rubbish for the air too!

Och, you poor wee scone. Visions of you setting the fire, on your hands and knees by the hearth with the coal shovel in one hand and the pan off the kitchen scales in the other, hands and face all black and streaky and trying to figure out if you can save a lump or two! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

A little trick for measuring the LPG. Assuming it's the bottled Calor. With the cooker running, take a jug of lukewarm water and pour it down one side of the bottle. As the liquid gas expands to your actual gas as it is drawn off, the level in the bottle will be shown by a 'frost line' as you trickle water down the outside. Mark the bottle and then take another 'reading' at the end of the week. Been a while since I had bottled gas so I forget the inches to kWh calculation, but you should be able to approximate how much you have used.

Every week is energy saving week, but I’ve grown accustomed to my current regime which some would regard as extravagant while others would wonder how it’s done. So I’ll just plough on as normal, because I’ll not sacrifice my warmth and health for campaigns. So long as the bills are affordable I’ll stay as I am.

Aye don't forget a wee Highland coo poking his head through the window, while the neighbours play their bagpipes while wearing a kilt 🤣 Also I think the plural is still haggis a bit like sheep but I need to find this out for sure as I'm now questioning everything I ever thought I knew 🤔😆

I have a friend in Crieff who often has next door's coos poking their heads through the fence, and on one occasion, one stole her dustbin.

We have Welsh cows at the bottom of the field we run the 🐶🐶 in, with only a couple of strands of barbed wire to separate them. More than once the lads have gone in to say hello, and we regularly get visiting sheep my side. When manicuring the grass, beware of 'lamb mines'.

At least here in Wales they use a slightly different word to distinguish between one sheep (un ddafad) and several sheep (ddefaid).

As for bagpipes...I'm very partial to the occasional pibroch or lament to accompany a nice single malt. Said friend's husband is a 'master of malt' as well as a rather accomplished piper and I've spent more than one very pleasant evening up there expanding my knowledge of whisky while he's tootled away on the pipes.

Sadly these days, the economic climate isn't so conducive to driving up to visit so often.
