No problem, and no need to worry. If a meter battery fails, the meter will need replacing but the worst that happens is that it goes into 'free vend' and E.On just have to estimate your consumption until replaced. It will not leave you without cooking or heating.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.
@Tommysgirl I've doubled checked and this is the process:
When a customer's meters current certification ends we’ll get in touch with them to arrange a meter replacement, free of charge.
We’ll replace expired meters with new, next-generation Smart meter.
Traditional meters aren’t available in the UK as they are no longer being manufactured, which is why we will replace your expired meter with a smart one.
A letter will be sent as not everyone has an email address and we are required to change your meter under government legislation and must ensure that our customers have a reliable, fully-functioning meter, although its not a safety issue if the meter’s certification has expired, it doesn’t mean it’s unsafe a certification relates specifically to accuracy rather than safety. 😊

Thank you for your reply. I am an older person and tried to get through yesterday with no luck...I was just worried that if I had an emergency there would be noway of getting help. I have a meter that's 8 yrs old and am worried that the battery may need changing soon ...do you know how long they last?

Usually around 10 years, but it varies. You would usually get a warning on the meter if the battery is getting low. If the battery does fail, your meter will not cut you off, so don't panic. For meter emergencies, you can call the emergency number 0808 501 5088
Thank you so much. Would you know if they email to change the meter when it's getting to the end of it's life or is this something I have to arrange (say in summer when they are not so busy)?
just for information - all this refers to gas smart meters and not to any other meters. The internal battery is supposed to last up to 15 years I think, but in the real world they sometimes don’t.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.

When the battery died on my gas meter a couple of years ago, I rang to tell them (this was Npower before I was transferred to Eon Next) they booked an engineer appointment over the phone, and confirmed the appointment with a follow up email. I think it will be the same procedure with Eon. My gas supply continued as normal, as retrotecchie so rightly says, and they estimated my usage for the short time the old meter was not working until the new one was installed. I'd ring them if you get a low battery warning on the meter, and they should put a request through to their metering department to arrange an appointment.😃👍
