I contacted Phillips Cohen and told them (again) that this was an error on their part and to stop sending further letters. I also contacted EON and they looked into the matter and admitted there had been an error somewhere but couldn't understand how it had happened. They apologised and said they would contact Phillips Cohen and get the debt removed. Phillips Cohen have since apologised for any stress and worry caused and have removed the file.

That is good to hear. I would suggest keeping details of all communications as these matters have a habit of recurring. You might wish to check that nothing adverse is showing in files with credit reference agencies.
