They've been putting most meters outside since the 90s.
Bit of info on this if anyones interested. There's quite a few areas where the gas supply is medium pressure , homes connected to these have to have the meter and associated kit installed externally in a meter box to comply with the gas regs.

Reason: Additional information
My electric meter is in an external enclosure and I have a proper utility key, so no biggie for me. Unfortunately it is in a very awkward location for me. I'm seriously considering fitting a second meter in my pantry next to the consumer unit, but more likely will just fit a small camera in the meter cubby so I can take remote readings.
Utility keys only cost a quid or so and make the job so much easier than struggling with pliers.
Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.

@Plantagenet
And a bit more info for those with broken meter box latches, there are repair meter box covers complete with door, available that fit over your original box. Good if the hinges on your meter box are also broken.
… I'll also try asking the service engineer when he does the service and safety check next month. That will probably be quicker than waiting for the new meter to be installed. 😃
You never know your luck. Let us know if you get a new one fitted.
