Scared

    Hi guys,

I am really scared about not being able to put on my heating. I sit in my house with fingers and toes numb from the cold. I cannot afford to put on the heating. I am so scared, as it is not even the depths of winter yet. I think I might die from the cold. I wear three layers, two if them fleece. I just cannot keep warm. I just found out they are not paying the Warm home discount to disabled people anymore. What can I do?

@Hedwig If the disabled person is in receipt of a qualifying benefit such as Housing Benefit or ESA, they will still qualify.

Plain disability in and of itself is no longer a direct qualification.

Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons.

@retrotecchie this will exclude the working disabled. They are really killing me.

Have you got an electric blanket for your bed ? They are a relative cheap way to warm it @ approx 20 pence per hour to run.

And many of the rest of us were excluded last year, despite being in some financial difficulty. We did not get a penny towards fuel last winter. I appreciate your predicament, but you say you are at least working and so are earning something of a wage? You do of course know that the Warm Home Discount is not a taxpayer funded government handout, but a levy on all the rest of us energy bill payers to the tune of around £20 a year. Personally I'd rather the scheme didn't exist and we all saved £20 a year off our bills rather than penalise everyone to pass a 'discount' on to a few, but it is what it is. If you don't qualify this year but you did last year, then I'm sorry but I don't make the rules, and nor do the energy companies.

The government have directed the payments to people on means tested benefits rather than disability benefits. But many more people will get the increased payment and the disabled on low incomes are not being excluded. The is a problem with government interventions with people thinking they are permanent entitlements rather than discretionary payments. The changes don’t save the government anything as these are funded by other customers and the scope has been considerably widened. The bottom line is that there are many people worse off than you who will really appreciate these payments.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.

@retrotecchie I am disabled so I have much higher energy costs amongst other costs that others don't have. I work to stay independent but the government penalised disabled people who work

@retrotecchie I don't pay for Netflix. So I cannot save by cancelling a subscription!

@Hedwig Anasa here 👋 I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling and are worried it really is a worrying time for everyone even those of us that are working, I am sorry to hear that you're struggling with your disabilities as well and I hope that you are getting all the help that you can. If you've not noticed there is some help available Here it might be worth a little look. We'll also keep you updated with any help or changes that we can support you with.

I think the idea of a heated blanket is a great idea and as mentioned above they are quite cheap to run not like when they first came out, and it just helps keep you a little bit warmer, I know I'll be getting myself one just to keep the chill off before having to put the central heating on or the fire and I must say I do appreciated fluffy socks and slippers at Christmas now more than ever especially the thermal ones every little helps - If you do need to talk to someone or are really struggling and need help paying your bills please check out the link above and reach out to one of our Digi Energy Specialist and they will look into it with you, perhaps go through some energy saving tips, I've known for years that you should take out your charges, switch appliances off at the socket whenever you can but I don't always do it but since the price rise I've definitely tried to do it more where ever I can I know its not much but it's something to try and make a bit of a difference 😊

20p an hour is way too way for the cost for probably all blankets.

My 15 year old (bed) electric blanket is rated at 70 Watts and we have a heated throw rated at 110 Watts and in 1 hour they would use 0.07kWh (70/1000) and 0.110kWh (110/1000) respectively costing a very reasonable 2.38p/hour and 3.74p/hour assuming a 34p/kWh unit cost of electricity
