SMETS1+ stopped communicating readings and IHD not connecting
-
I have a SMETS 1 from british gas that was dead up until roughly april this year at which point it got migrated and started to send out meter readings again along with the IHD starting to work again, since about 2 weeks ago my IHD has stopped working and the meter has stopped sending readings, i am now 37 days since last meter read. is there anything i can do to get it working again? tried resetting the IHD but that didnt work and its constantly stuck saying connecting to smart meter...

Roughly what part of the UK are you in? Several mobile networks have already begun switching off 3g and as the meters use that channel for communications in the southern half of the UK, it could be related to that. All the smart meters in my part of the world became dumb meters when EE shut down 3G in October. Lots of folks round here also had to go out and get replacement phones.
Not that we ever had a signal in our village anyway...Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player. I DON'T work for or on behalf of EON.Next, but am willing to try and help if I can. Not on mains gas, mobile network or mains drainage. House heated almost entirely by baby dragons. -

The best I can suggest is to post photos of your meter(s), comms hub and IHD. If you can describe exactly what the lights (HAN, WAN etc.) on the comms hub are doing, ie. On or Off, what colour, if flashing then at what rate, then perhaps our smart meter/IHD volunteer expert @theunknowntech might drop in and help with a diagnosis.I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit. -
@retrotecchie im in south wales, i really hope this isnt the issue as between not having an IHD since switching and now it going off again i might as well have stayed on my old meters and avoided the hassle of the install.

Not sure about South Wales, but Wales generally will be switched off first, due to the much smaller population. I'm in the West, in Ceredigion, and EE turned off 3g here on 01 October, with Vodafone following suit in January 2023. O2 share infrastructure with Vodafone and Three have no 3g presence here at all, so come January all bets are off.
If you are in a more densely populated area of South Wales, your mileage may vary. No one round my village has smart meters as even before the switch off, the coverage was patchy at best.
The IHD should still communicate with the meters, however, as the HAN part of the meter is on a different system to the connection between the meter and the external WAN network. You just won't get any up to date tariff information if the meter can't 'phone home', but should still be able to track consumption, if not the pounds and pence.
Some info on what the lights on the meter are doing may help diagnose the problem, as @JoeSoap says.Last edited by retrotecchie; 02-11-22 at 23:08.

@JoeSoap i have the SMETS1 Landis+Gyr E470, The power light is solid green, HAN is flashing green on off every second or so and the WAN light is not doing anything, i also get an occasional red flash from the meter itself maybe every 30 seconds.

Thanks for posting the info. I have tagged the unknown tech earlier in the thread so hopefully you will get some advice here. In the meantime, you could send an email or WhatsApp to customer service using the details here, either linking to this thread or detailing what information you have given here. That way you will have two avenues open where you will hopefully get some results. -
@rachy4179 thank you for sharing with us your concern. All the comments in this thread are very useful and thank you to everyone that has been supportive! It's great to see all this engagement and support between each other.
Quick question, due to the EPG and the new government guidelines and grants, have you recently moved tariffs? For example from a fixed to a standard variable one ? I ask because if this is the case, potentially the non communication of the IHD can be connected to the change or tariff and the need to update that remotely through your account. -
Even dumb digital meters do that. The red Flash is the Impulse light. 1000 flashes per kWh recorded. How fast that flashes depends on how much energy you are using. Put on the kettle or an electric oven and it flashes much faster.
Nothing at all on the WAN indicates no connection to the external network. Have you tried the Citizens Advice smart meter checker to see if your meter can be detected?
