I'm considering moving over to Economy 7 at my current place. I'm sure it's moved on a little since I last had it in a house in the mid 90s, but as I understand, E7 meters and their synchronisation, timings and dual rates still depend on RTS signals, broadcast by the Radio 4 Long Wave transmitter at Droitwich.
As the BBC plan to switch off the transmitter and the long wave service in 2023, how will E7 work going forward?
I don't want to commit any time soon if the technology is about to become obsolete.
Mesh enabled Comms Hubs stand a fairly good chance! :)
Just another guy passing by... The unknown tech way...

I think you'd want to get an E7 compliant smart meter and assurance that you will switch to the new tariff the day them meter is fitted. I don't think a time switch will be required. @theunknowntech is more au fait with this - doubtless hell be along shortly.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.

Smart meters don't work round here...too remote and no phone networks. That's why standard (non smart) E7 relies on the RTS system. Back in the day, you would have the time switch to turn your storage heaters and immersion on and off. These days, thats rarely needed. The communication is just used to synchronise the time and flip between the two rate registers.
Assuming there are other smart meters within hailing distance. There is a total population of 200 souls in our hamlet. Perhaps 40 houses spread out in a circle with a three mile radius. One neighbour, a mile away was just about able to connect to the mobile network, until 01 October this year when EE turned off the 3g service in our area. Not that it worked reliably anyway.
Of the dozen or so neighbours I know in the village, everyone has been told smart meters are a complete no-no round here. One even had one installed and then had to have it changed back as it just didn't work. Not even the IHD works when you have an external meter cabinet and 30" thick stone walls, apparently, unless you take it outside in the rain and fog..
My (non-smart) E7 meter was manufactured and installed in 2007, as far as I know it just relies on its internal clock for the time, it has gained a little over the years, but is accurate enough for its purpose.
