I had my smart meter fitted last year when I was away at work. The IHD sat on top of the meter in the garage until last week when I noticed it.
When I took the IHD into the house it dropped to "one dot" and then "waiting for data". I was 4m away!
EON phone support has said that is normal and I should leave the IHD in the garage which to my mind totally negates the reason for having an IHD n the first place.
"Googling" says the standard device will only work in 66-70% of installations. What happens if I am in the 30-35% as appears to be the case? More "googling" says a Dual-band device pushes the likelihood of it working to 96%
The phone operator refused to discuss the matter and said EON do not have a technical department that could talk about this.
My house is not particularly unusual. My kitchen IHD location is c.8m from the meter
The original install tech of the meter probably knew the IHD would not work and did not explain the device to my wife which I believe they should have.
What options do I have?
This is a technical one for @theunknowntech. As to what the installers are supposed to do, go to this site (below) and click on the latest report. You will then see what the installers are supposed to do and how well each supplier measures up.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
Single-Band Comms Hubs have up to a 10-15m range. Dual-Band Comms Hubs have up to a 50m+ range. If you can show me photos, I'll be able to tell you what you've got.
Please bear in mind that these are averages and your experience may vary depending on the environment.
Just another guy passing by... The unknown tech way...

Many thanks for the quick reply.
See attached a pic of the meter which I am pretty sure is a Single Band.
The IHD is a Geo Trio II
I'm not getting near 10m and I reckon the tech should have known that when it was fitted.
How can I go about getting a Dual Band meter + IHD which I think should have been fitted in the first place?
Ahh... You're in the Northern Territory on the Arqiva WAN. I'm afraid there's no Dual-Band Comms Hub for your area at this time, as Long-Range Radio Dual-Band CH's don't yet exist to my knowledge.
It looks like EDMI Dual-Band Comms Hubs for your area are coming. This is a list of all known SMETS2 Comms Hubs that are either in service right now, or planned for service soon.
