Standard Variable and Fixed Tariff Information (October 22)

Standard Variable Tariff (SVT or Next Flex)

As of today, the customers on a standard variable tariff aka the Next Flex tariff have had their direct debits and payments updated in their online accounts.

    Fixed Term Tariffs (Next Online)

This one is a little more complicated. Where customers are on a fixed term tariff and are at a financial disadvantage we have made the decision to move them onto the Next Flex.

The customers that we have switched to SVT will have a letter/email in the next few days which will contain all the details they need to know.

If you are an affected customer and are unhappy that we have taken this action on your behalf, please get in touch with us.

How will customers paying by Monthly SVT receive the £67 instalments of the £400 Energy bill support scheme? It is not covered in the How do I receive my payment list. I have just spent 2 hours in a queue on the phone, but they did not know.

@Tommysgirl I am on monthly SVT and can confirm that my usual DD of £100 came out as £33 this month, so I've "paid" £100 using my actual DD plus my £67 credit for this month (plus I've also topped up with a one off payment as £100 no longer enough - DD rising from 1 November)
  • Beki's Avatar
@Tommysgirl As @Joster has said above. You will get a bill with your energy usage on it, we then deduct £67 from that amount and any remaining credit is added to your account.

So for example, if your bill came to £50 this month, you wouldn't pay anything on your direct debit and then £17 would be added to your account. This may not be reflected on your online account just yet, but it will be soon.

If next month it was £70 of usage, the £67 would be deducted and your direct debit amount will be £3.

    Hope that helps. Beki

Yes, that definitely helps. I was worried that other customers and I who pay by monthly variable Direct Debit had been overlooked when there was no mention of this group in the "How will I be receive my payment list", and the person who answered the phone did not know either. Thanks for the reply.

@Tommysgirl I will feed that back and ensure the wording covers both fixed and variable direct debit customers in future. Thank you 😊

Glad to hear some definitive news 😁

My fixed v18 tariff started on October 1st and rates have now appeared on my account with the correct application of the EPG but I know I will be disadvantaged (compared to the SVT/EPG Next Flex cap) albeit much less than those on v19 and v20. I am more than happy to be put onto the Next Flex SVT/EPG cap and this will save me a phone call to HQ to effect this.

Can you confirm (or not) that the rates that apply to these such customers will be back-dated, if necessary, to take effect from 1st October assuming that such customers were disadvantaged compared to those on the SVT/Cap Next Flex tariff at that date.

    That is indeed good news.

What though of those who fixed just before 1 October and thus paid higher rates? This doesn't impact me but might others. Any idea @Beki_EONNext?

Here are the price tables for electricity and gas derived from the OFGEM announcement of 29 August which allowed new price caps from 1 October 2022 for variable price tariffs, and then how these rates are amended to take account of the Government’s Energy Price Guarantee (EPG). These are for Direct Debit customers. As OFGEM do not publish unit or daily rates, they have to be calculated. Plus OFGEM set price caps only for certain benchmark levels of usage, so one has to work back by taking the amount allowed for the standing charge away from the figures for the benchmark consumption, and then divide by the benchmark usage level. It has to be noted that suppliers can charge lower than the maximum allowed standing charge which would allow a higher unit rate to be charged instead. Few actually do this. In applying the EPG, only unit prices are affected, and so the increase in standing charges authorised by OFGEM goes ahead unaltered. The prices calculated after the EPG reductions have been applied also represent the “floor rates” for customers on fixed price tariffs, thus they are the prices to which the EPG will lower prices using the 17p reduction on Electricity and 4.2p reduction on Gas. The EPG will not bring rates below this floor level. Some customers on recent fix tariffs might find that even after applying these reductions their rates remain above the EPG variable rates (or the EPG floor rates – they are the same). These customers should refer to E.On Next statements on what needs to be done- it looks as though they will be switched to the standard variable rates.

    @meldrewreborn

I can confirm these correct (for Northern at least) and are what I have been using in my EPG calculations. Once I see my unit rate for electricity go to 32.24p/kWh (instead of the present 34.01p/kWh) then I shall relax (a little). The EPG gas rate is correct for my region (10.22p/kWh) and I am already at that rate after its reduction.
