Really confused

    I've been trying to get a smart meter for ages. The website is broken and never takes me to a form. Today I got a call from someone who identified as an e.on representative. She said they wanted to upgrade my smart meter. I was excited... Finally!

    Then she started asking me for personal details. I refused to share any, of course, to be safe. I said I'll call e.on back. I did. They said there are no slots available for months... What's going on?

    Looks like you had a scam caller. Hopefully you have had a genuine reply by now. If not I would try to contact customer service by any means to be found here
    I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit.

    2 months ago we had solar panels fitted which require a smart meter to calculate the power we return to grid and get paid for it.
    After much discussion and a missed appointment an electrician turned up to to install the new meter but pointed to the Radio Teleswitch, which controls our Economy 7 timings, and said he could not connect to it.

    From postings here and across the web it seems there are smart meters that can cope with Economy 7. Why did he not fit one?

    Further, it seems the Radio Teleswitch signal will be turned off in March 2023 making a smart meter essential.

    I quote Ofgem open letter of 29th March 2022

    " RadioTeleSwitch
    Currently thetechnology which operates theRadioTeleSwitchmeters (RTS)is scheduled
    to be switched off in March 2023.We are aware many suppliersalreadyhave a suitable
    meterin place for these customers,however we arealsoaware of some wider issues.We
    fully expect all of industry to be proactively working towardssolutions to any potential
    barriers sothatconsumers are not left exposed to any potential detriment.
    Energy suppliers are obligated to ensure all customers have appropriate metering
    arrangementsin placeand suppliersshouldbe working hard to ensure all customerswith
    traditional RTS metersare offered a smart meter prior to the switch off.If a workable
    industry solution cannot be reachedin a timely mannerprior to thecut-offdate,thenwe
    wouldexpectmitigatingarrangements bepreparedand implemented well in advance of
    this date."

    When can we have a smart meter, please?

    @theunknowntech has said in the past that all current smart meters can deal with economy 7. We've also seen that Suppliers seem very keen not to install economy 7 meters. I think the situation is disgraceful given the price advantages economy 7 offers some customers. Make a formal complaint about your treatment. This is costing you real money.

    I don't think SMETS2 meters need an external time switch to deliver economy 7 - so I'm perplexed at what excuses could be proffered to explain your treatment.
    Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and don't like smart meters. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but Iโ€™ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.

    SMETS2 can handle the entire Economy 7 workload as long as the correct models are used, such as the Aclara SGM1416-B. The Landis+Gyr E470 however, does not have a built-in load switch for E7 purposes and can only flip the rates at the scheduled times.
