E.ON Next are trying to install Smart Meters for me. However, the installation has now been cancelled several times “because there is no signal”.

Is this a widespread problem, or is it local to my area TS7 (Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough)?

You might have better luck with other suppliers to be honest. Some of them seem more capable of figuring out other options but I'll see if @PeterT_EONNext can advise first as a final chance.

I'm sorry to hear that you've had a number of failed Smart appointments.

I can't view your account from here unfortunately so I won't be able to look at any specifics in relation to the appointments that have been booked. When these appointments have failed, have they all been cancelled before going ahead, or have you ever had an engineer actually visit the property to see if we can install a Smart Meter for you?

There are some areas in and around the UK where a slightly different type of set up is needed due to signal issues, but it's usually something that can be overcome (and it's likely that your appointments may have been booked incorrectly due to no prior knowledge of this being the case for your property)

Is the area that you live in relatively built up or a remote area? Also, do you have any idea at all how strong/weak the o2 mobile signal may be in the area?

The appointments have all been cancelled in advance, with nobody coming to the house.

This area is a suburban built-up area with a strong 4G (but no 5G yet) O2 mobile signal.

As I understand it, smart meter signals in the North of England do not use the mobile phone network:

Scotland and the North of England

Long-Range Radio communications (LRR) is used by Arqiva Limited in Scotland and the North of England. The LRR system uses infrastructure and technology similar to that already used for other important national communications networks, such as those for emergency services and keeping lifeboat stations connected. Communication towers communicate directly with smart meter Communications Hubs in homes.

It sounds like a different type of appointment needs to be booked due to the way the Smart Meters would have to be connected to the network in your area and this could explain the previous cancellations of the appointments.

If this is the case, we're currently expanding on the area that we can install Smart Meters, and it may have been determined that for your area, this isn't possible for us currently. Due to the previous cancellations, our Smart Team will be aware of this and will be in touch with you once we are installing Smart Meters that will work in your area, this will more than likely be via an email.
